St. Thomas wraps up another conference title

No. 2-ranked St. Thomas (29-5 overall, 17-1 MIAC) clinched the program's 11th consecutive MIAC baseball championship with Monday's 12-2, 4-0 home sweep of second-place Gustavus (12-19, 9-7).

The Toms have won 48 of their last 50 regular-season conference games and have captured 39 in a row on their home diamond.

Junior Tyler Peterson went 4-for-5 with four RBI in game one and junior  J.D. Dorgan went 3-for-4 with two RBI in game two. Junior Tim Kuzniar went 4-for-6 with five RBI on the day and has 27 RBI in his last 14 games.

Senior RHP Josh Kubitschek fanned nine in six innings to take the game-one victory. Junior LHP Zach Franz pitched six shutout innings in game two and fanned five with no walks allowed. Three of the five hits Franz surrendured were infield squibbers near the mound.

St. Thomas has locked up the top seed for the May 10-12 MIAC Playoffs. It closes the regular season Tuesday May 7 with a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader against Hamline.
