Allen, Walters Homer in 13-1 Win over John Jay

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 7, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 13-1 rout of John Jay College in a CUNYAC contest on Friday afternoon at Dobbelaar Field.

Stevens pounded out 18 hits and seven for extra bases in the game. The Ducks' pitching staff also struck out 16 batters and gave up just four hits.

The Ducks plated a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single down the rightfield line from freshman Zeph Walters (Diamond Bar, Calif.) that brought senior Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) around to score from second base.

Junior Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the second with a double to left-center and then crossed home on an RBI base hit from sophomore Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) on the ensuing at bat to give the Ducks a 2-0 advantage.

In the third, Stevens put three runs on the board on back-to-back homeruns from Allen and Walters. Allen stroked a two-run shot to center after sophomore Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) led off the frame with a double. Walters then stepped to the plate and sent a towering drive to right to cap off the offense in the inning.

John Jay notched its only run of the contest in the top of the fourth with consecutive hits to break the string of 16 1/3 hitless innings tossed by the Stevens pitching staff.

The Ducks tacked on two more in the fifth on a double from sophomore Tyler Bush (Bristol, Conn.) that scored junior Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.). A few batters later, Yano brought Bush home on a sacrifice fly to center.

Allen drove in another run in the seventh after senior Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) reached on a single and then stole his way to third. After Allen swiped a pair of bags, he completed his trip around the bases on a base hit from junior Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.).

Stevens' offense continued in the eighth with four runs on four hits. Yano pushed sophomore John Sideris (Whitestone, N.Y.) home with the bases loaded on a single to center, and then freshman P.J. Wiegartner (Hamilton Square, N.J.) picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly that plated freshman Brett Viola (Carmel, N.Y.). The big blow of the inning was delivered by freshman Michael Mule' (Boca Raton, Fla.), who picked up two RBI on a double. Freshmen Michael Yorita (Irvine, Calif.) and Nolan Bennett (Chatsworth, Calif.) scored on the play.

Allen went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Walters also collected three hits in five trips to the plate with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Hennelly, Mannello and Yano all recorded two hits apiece, while Lowenstein stole four bases and walked twice.

On the mound, junior Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.) picked up the victory with six strikeouts in three no-hit innings. Marston was then replaced by classmate Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) who struck out four batters and allowed three hits over three innings. Freshman Will Korosec (Cream Ridge, N.J.) made his collegiate debut and fanned the side in the seventh, while Allen and Walters each tossed an inning and combined for three punch outs.

Stevens heads to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for three games over Spring Break next week. The Ducks will play Catholic University on March 9, Ursinus College on the 10th and Mount Alyosius College on the 11th.
