UMHB falls to Sul Ross State in series opener

Alpine, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not recover from eight runs in the middle three innings as the Cru went on to a 13-4 loss to Sul Ross State Friday night in Alpine. The loss drops the Cru to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The Lobos improve to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the ASC on the year with the victory.

UMHB grabbed a 1-0 lead when Chase Burrow scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second. Sul Ross took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of that inning on Eli Gallego's two-run double, but the Cru answered with Tyler Taute's RBI groundout in the top of the third. The Lobos put four on the board in the bottom of the fourth before Rob Loewe's RBI single cut it to 6-3 in the top of the fifth. Sul Ross scored two in the bottom of the fifth, two more in the sixth and three in the eight to take control of the game. Taute's RBI single in the top of the ninth would provide the final UMHB run.

Dakota Parsons had three of the Cru's 10 hits in the game and Loewe and Will Stafford added two hits apiece. Ian Ekery took his first loss of the year to drop to 3-1. He gave up five runs and seven hits in three innings of work. Six Lobos had two or more hits to lead a 16-hit offensive attack. Trent Blackwater held the Cru to nine hits and two earned runs over eight innings to raise his record to 4-0 on the year.

The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader Saturday in Alpine. UMHB will then play a non-conference game at Southwestern University in Georgetown next Tuesday before returning home to host Mississippi College for a three-game series next weekend at Red Murff Field.
