Marietta downs Wooster and Salem State in Snowbird Classic

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Junior third baseman Christian Demko went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs leading Marietta College to a pair of wins in the Snowbird Classic Sunday (March 9) afternoon. Demko had a double and a triple on the day.

Marietta (4-0 overall) defeated the College of Wooster (0-1) by the score of 7-3 to start the day and then beat Salem State University (2-2) 8-4 to stay perfect on the season.

Sophomore Jason Byers (2-0) tossed 7.0 innings to pick up the win against Wooster. He allowed one run on three hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Junior Mike Fulton and Freshman Zak Janus each threw an inning of relief.

Demko picked up his first RBI in the second inning of the first game driving in Clint Roche who reached on an error. Senior Zak Bukiewicz made it 2-0 with an RBI single that plated Ryan Hanahan.

Wooster got on the board with a run in the top of the seventh, but the Pioneers responded with one in the home half of the inning. Marietta added four insurance runs in the eighth.

Josh Ungerbuehler worked a bases-loaded walk to get the scoring started. Hanahan followed with a single through the right side scoring Mitch Geers. Demko plated Chris Winpigler with a single to center and Dylan Gracia earned a walk with the bases loaded.

Demko finished the game 2-for-w with two RBI. Hanahan scored twice and drove in another.

In the second game, Salem State jumped on top in the second inning with an unearned run. Marietta quickly responded scoring two runs in the bottom of the second.

Ungerbuehler led off the second with a triple to the wall in left-center. Clint Roche picked up the RBI with a ground out to short. Hanahan walked, stole second and moved to third on a balk. He later scored on an infield single from Gracia.

The Pioneers added a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth to build a 7-1 lead. Demko tripled and scored on a single by Gracia in the fourth. Roche, Demko and Kevin Johnston each drove in runs in the fifth.

Sophomore Christian Herstine (1-0) got the win after pitching 6.0 innings. He allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Freshman Tommy Crowl picked up his first career save with 3.0 innings of 0ne-run relief.

Gracia led the Pioneer offense with three hits and two RBI. Ungerbuehler was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored, while Demko finished 2-for-2 with a double and triple.

Marietta plays Montclair State University (March 10) at 12:00 p.m.
