Pena, Sonenshine lead CCNY's sweep of SUNYIT

BROOKLYN, NY --- Gabriel Pena totaled four hits with a home run and three RBI in two games on Saturday as the City College of New York baseball team swept visiting SUNYIT, 5-4 and 8-4, at MCU Park in Brooklyn. The Beavers of CCNY improve to 5-3 while the Wildcats of SUNYIT drop to 4-6. Just eight games into their 2014 season, City has already matched last season's win total.
 
Pena continued to rip the cover off the ball, going two-for-three and scoring two runs in game one before smashing a 2-RBI home run to left center in the bottom of the first in game two. Pena later hit a sacrifice fly to score another run. Jacob Sonenshine had three hits, including a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh in game one. Sonenshine went two-for-four with a walk and a run in game two. Adrian Pena finished the day with five hits and two doubles, while Bobby McDowell added three hits and three runs batted in.
 
Yoribaldis Olivo came through in relief in game one, getting three outs in the seventh to earn the win. Jose Aquino struck out two as he went the distance in game two, earning his third win of the year. Brian Collado had four strikeouts in the game one start.
 
Adrian Pena drove in the first run of the day in the bottom of the second of game one, singling up the middle to score Gabriel Pena. Sonenshine had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth, with Gabriel Pena once again being the run-scorer. Up 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, McDowell and Mike Smith each hit an RBI single as the Beavers took a 4-1 lead. The Wildcats stormed back in the top of the seventh, however, scoring three runs to tie the game. In the bottom of the seventh, Sonenshine came to the plate with two outs and men at second and third. With a 2-2 count, the first-year transfer made contact and got a ball to drop into shallow left field to score Smith as City escaped with the win.
 
In game two, Gabriel Pena, batting cleanup, went yard in the bottom of the first to put CCNY ahead 2-0. Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the second, McDowell hit an RBI single to center to score Olivo, and the Beavers would not surrender the lead again. McDowell finished two-for-four with two RBI.
 
Up next for CCNY, the team heads to Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to take on the Monarchs.
