York's Streak Reaches 11 with 10-5 Win over Messiah

YORK, Pa. – The York College baseball team extends its win streak to 11 games after a 10-5 victory over non-conference neighbor Messiah on Thursday afternoon from a rain-soaked Jaquet Field.

It was a seven-run fourth inning that put York (14-2) in the lead for good as the Spartans tallied five hits, combined with one costly Messiah (8-8) error to start the inning that led to the offensive outburst.

York finished the fourth inning with 11 batters reaching base as nine of those batters reached base and five runs were scored before the first out of the inning was recorded. Logan Countryman (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven), who led off the inning, reached base twice, scored one run and received credit for an RBI.

After falling in a 3-0 hole through the first two and a half innings, the Spartans got two back in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2. Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) reached base and advanced to second as the second baseman tried to flip the ball out of his glove, but ended up flipping the ball over the first baseman's head and out of play.

The next batter up was Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) who singled up the middle and scored Wenzel form second. The Spartans then loaded the bases and recorded their second run of the inning with an RBI walk by senior Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western).

York tacked on one more run in the eighth when Porter singled up the middle to score Herr from second after he had reached on a throwing error and advanced to second earlier in the inning.

Herr led the Spartans with hits (3) and runs (3) as he went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI. Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) recorded the only extra-base hit of the day for the Green and White with a double as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI and scored two runs.

Dan McNamara (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) picked up the win and improves to 1-0 as he entered in the third inning and tossed four and one third innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Paul Broomell received credit for the loss and falls to 0-2 as he pitched three complete innings, allowing four runs on four hits with one strikeout and five walks

York now has now recorded double-digit runs and hits in the same game for the sixth time this season.

The Spartans will return to action on Friday as they travel to Fredericksburg, Va. for a CAC doubleheader against Mary Washington. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
