Giants Win Nightcap to Claim Split at Immaculata

More news about: Keystone

Immaculata, PA – After being held to just one hit in a 4-1 loss in the opener of Sunday's Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Immaculata University, Keystone College's offense came alive in game two with 15 hits on their way to an 11-9 victory to salvage a split of the twin bill.  The Giants move to 9-10 on the season and 6-1 in conference play while the Mighty Macs go to 8-9 overall and 2-4 in the CSAC.

In Sunday's first game, Keystone got their only hit off of Immaculata starter Dan Whalen with one out in the top of the fourth inning when Domenick Montanaro (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) tripled, and the opportunistic Giants took advantage of their first threat of the game as Montanaro then scored on an RBI groundout by Dan Denton (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Mighty Macs were finally able to reward Whalen in the bottom of the sixth inning with four runs, the first two coming on a two-run home run off the bat of Joe DiGiaimo before two more runs came around to score following a Keystone error after Patrick Boulware doubled.

That would be more than enough for Whalen, who retired the side in order in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win and improve to 3-0 on the season with the one-hitter.
Whelan recorded eight strikeouts in the victory while walking just one.

DiGiaimo led Immaculata with three hits in the win.

Mike Pembleton (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Township) (1-1) suffered the loss despite allowing just one earned run on seven hits while going the distance on the mound with six strikeouts.

In Sunday's nightcap, Keystone jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their first at-bats with Denton singling home Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) before Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded which allowed Denton to walk home with the Giants' second run.  Immaculata got a run back in the home half of the inning, but Keystone countered with three runs in the visitor's third to hold a 5-1 advantage.  Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) drew a bases loaded walk before scoring, along with Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace), one an error following a base hit by Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert).

The Mighty Macs used a six-run bottom of the third to claim a 7-5 lead, but Keystone used a five-run fifth inning to hold a 10-7 advantage.  Montanaro tied the score with a two-run single up the gut before Denton doubled to the gap in left-center to bring home Montanaro and Riscica.  Denton then scored the Giants' 10th run of the contest on a base hit by Bzozowski.

After the hosts got a run back in the home fifth, Catherina restored Keystone's three-run cushion with a solo home run to left with one out in the seventh inning.  Immaculata scored a run in the seventh inning and had the tying run in scoring position, but Steve Aniska (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) was able to shut the door to notch his second save of the season.

Denton led Keystone's offense with a 3-4, three RBI performance while Dylan Corl (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch ) added three hits for the Giants.

Staring pitcher Robert Minaya (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) took a no-decision after being charged with seven runs on six hits to go along with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.  James Dunning (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) (2-0) was credited with the win after tossing two innings and allowing one run on three hits while fanning two batters before turning the ball over to Adam Sosnowski (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley), who allowed just one walk and collecting one K in 1.1 innings on the hill.  Aniska battled through one hit and two walks to pick up the final three outs.

Howie Kalamets and Mike Lascomb had two hits apiece to lead Immaculata's offense while Eli Vottero drove in three runs in the loss.

The Mighty Macs used six different pitchers with Nick Campione (0-1) being charged with the loss.

Keystone will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Montclair State University for a non-conference game scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Montclair, NJ.
