Yeomen Win Series with a Sunday Split

More news about: Oberlin

Gambier, Ohio – Kenyon College walked-off with a 2-1 win in game one, but the Oberlin College baseball team bounced back to win game two 7-4 to earn a series win over the Lords.

Oberlin took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh of game one, but could not make it stand up as the Lords pushed two across to earn their first NCAC win of the season.

The Kenyon seventh started with an Oberlin error and after a strikeout, John Nara doubled to put runners at second and third and ultimately chase Yeomen starter Harrison Wollman from the game. With senior Mike McDonald now on to pitch, Sam Gillespie hit an RBI groundout to the tie the game before senior Casey Rosenfeld won it with a single to right. However, the Yeomen nearly forced extra innings as Andrew Hutson laid out for Rosenfeld's ball and had it in his glove briefly before it popped out as he went to the ground.

Wollman, who pitched his best game of the season, allowed just three hits as he struck out two and walked one in the tough-luck loss.

Pitching was at a premium for both teams as Lords' freshman Thomas Morris held the NCAC's best lineup in check as he allowed just five hits while fanning seven Yeomen in the complete-game victory.

Oberlin scored its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth when Jeff Schweighoffer came through with a clutch two-out double to the gap in left center to score Justin Cruz, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

The Yeomen's only other promising scoring threat came in the second as back-to-back two-out singles from Ryan Bliss and Danny Baldocchi put runners on the corners, but Thomas induced a fly out to get out of the inning.

In the nightcap Benjamin Whitener had a perfect game going through five innings as he was working with a 4-0 lead. However, the 6-foot-5 right-hander ran into some trouble in the sixth. Three singles and a double later, the Lords had three runs in to cut the Yeomen lead down to one.

McDonald's RBI double in the top of the seventh added a little bit of breathing room, but the Lords would answer back with a tally of their in the home-half of the inning to make it 5-4. The damage could have been worse had it not been for freshman Macabe Camps who entered with two on and one out, but the rookie got the Lords to hit into two ground ball outs to get out of the inning.

Oberlin would add two more insurance runs in the eighth, using two hits and an error to grab the three-run lead. Cruz delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-out run-scoring single to center that plated Blaise Dolcemaschio.

The Lords threated in the eighth as they again had runners at second and third with just one out. This time it was sophomore southpaw Kelby Spring who was able to maneuver out of the jam as he got Gillespie to foul out and Nate Lotze to ground out to escape unscathed.

The Yeomen went quickly in the ninth at the plate, making way for freshman closer Kyle Dominy to come in and close the door. The lefty from Phoenix, Arizona, did just that as worked a 1-2-3 inning to secure his fourth save of the season.

Oberlin built is early 4-0 cushion by posting single tallies in the first and third innings before scoring a pair in the fifth. Schweighoffer had RBI in the first and McDonald added one in the third. In the fourth it was Cruz and Novak who delivered the run-producing hits.

After going 1-for-3 in game one, Schweighoffer was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in game two as he has now hit safely in all 18 games.

The Yeomen are now 12-6 overall and 5-1 in NCAC East play. They will conclude their four-game set with Hiram on Wednesday afternoon, playing the final two games at Dill Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
