Jackets Post 13 Hits in 5-3 Victory

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Randolph-Macon baseball team advanced to 16-11 overall following their 5-3 victory over Mary Washington this afternoon in South Region action.

The Yellow Jackets took the early edge with three runs on three hits by Nate Meiners (Silver Spring, MD / St. John's Prep) (2-for-4), Mitch Keeler (Mechanicsville, VA / Atlee) (2-for-4), and Blake Saathoff (Catonsville, MD / Archbishop Spalding) (1-for-3). R-MC maintained that lead through four before the Eagles (13-18) could pick up two more runs and knot the game 3-3.

Tim Benjamin (Glenelg, MD / Glenelg) (2-for-4) led off the sixth inning with a double to right center, as a Sid Harvey (Ashburn, VA / Stone Bridge) (2-for-4) single scored Benjamin for the 4-3 go-ahead run. The Jackets would post an extra run in the eighth to hold off UMW and bring home the 5-3 victory.

Reliever Tanner Phillips (Powhatan, VA / Powhatan) (1-0) notched his first win, fanning three in two innings while Glen McLaughlin (Richmond, VA / Douglas Freeman) nabbed his fifth save.

The Randolph-Macon baseball team returns to Ashland this Thursday, April 10 to host Christopher Newport for a 3:30 PM contest on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
