Thiel Baseball Wins Third-Straight with 11-6 Victory over Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Thiel College baseball team registered 14 hits, slugging their way past the Grove City College Wolverines 11-6 Thursday in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action.

The win marked the third in a row for the Tomcats, who improved to 9-14 overall and 3-9 in the PAC play, while the loss dropped the Wolverines' record to 5-15 and 3-8 in the PAC.

Sophomore first baseman Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) went 2-for-4 with a home run, his first of the season, a run scored and three RBIs while junior shortstop Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) went 2-for-6 with a double, a home run, and two runs driven in as the Thiel offense tallied its eighth double-digit hit total this season.

In addition to Smith and Trinch, senior right fielder Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity) also drove in a pair of runners. Freshman third baseman Max Gunn (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), making just his third collegiate start, collected his first multi-hit performance with a 2-for-5 day at the plate, including tallying his first extra-base hit of his collegiate career. In all, seven Tomcats recorded multiple hits in the win.

The Tomcats built a ten run advantage, scoring at least one run in six of the nine innings, to secure the win.

Trinch led off the top of the first inning with a double. After he advanced to third on a groundout, Schiavoni delivered a double to the gap to score Trinch and stake the Tomcats to an early 1-0 lead. Not to be outdone, Smith followed Schiavoni with his second career home run that pushed Thiel's advantage to 3-0.

The game remained that score until the Wolverines scored on a RBI-single in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1.

Thiel got the run right back, as sophomore catcher Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) led off the fourth with a single. After back-to-back outs, sophomore center fielderMatt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) crushed a double to score Koller from second.

The Tomcats added two runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh to put the game out of reach. The scoring was highlighted by Trinch's second home run of the season in the top of the seventh.

Freshman Kevin Forrester (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) earned the win on the hill for Thiel, allowing just one run on six hits over seven frames to improve to 2-2 on the season.

The Tomcats are back in action Saturday when they travel to Latrobe, Pa. to take on the Saint Vincent College Bearcats. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
