William Paterson Baseball Falls at St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn, 3-2

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Sophomore shortstop K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), senior second baseman Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) and freshman third baseman Chris Santaniello (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) were all 2-for-4 but the William Paterson baseball team (11-17-1) suffered a 3-2 loss at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (20-8) April 21.

The Bears struck first with a pair of runs during their first at-bat, using two singles and a walk to load the bases for junior catcher Domenick Camerada, who drove in one run with a base hit through the left side. A bases-loaded walk for freshman second baseman Mitch Brigando made it a 2-0 score.

Santaniello opened the fifth with a single and was sacrificed to second by freshman catcher Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan). Sophomore left fielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) put down a bunt single, and a throwing error allowed Santaniello to cross the plate for the Pioneers' first run.

Base hits by senior first baseman Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) and Abel led to an RBI-single by freshman designated hitter Kyle Dotey (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) during the top half of the sixth inning, tying the score.

A walk, stolen base, wild pitch and Nicholas DiPrenza sacrifice fly pushed St. Joseph's-Brooklyn ahead for good in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Mike Sasso (West Orange, N.J./Montclair Kimberley) tossed 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two and walking two. Classmate Cavan Penberthy (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) surrendered two hits during 2.0 innings on the hill, while sophomore Jon Padilla (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) gave up a run and a walk, posting a strikeout, in 1.0 inning (0-2). Sophomore Mitch D'Amato (Edison, N.J./Edison) gave up a hit during his 1.0 inning of action.

Camerada was 4-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Chris Cutrone pitched the complete game, giving up 11 hits while striking out 10 (6-1).

William Paterson will celebrate Senior Day Thursday, April 24, against Montclair State at 3:30 p.m.
