Albion In Holding Pattern

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College squandered an opportunity to seize sole possession of fourth place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball standings when it split its Monday doubleheader with Olivet College.

Ben Crawford produced a career-high four doubles and five runs batted in, Brendan Diamond collected three hits and four RBI, Michael Fischbach slugged a home run and drove in three runs, and Matt Temrowski yielded a run over 4 2/3 innings of relief as Albion claimed a 19-6 victory in game one.

Fischbach and Spencer Bonofigliio combined for five of Albion's 10 hits in a 10-5 game two setback.

"Ben took some really good swings in game one and Michael did what he's been doing all year – putting good swings on pitches," Albion Head Coach Scott Carden said. "Michael kept us in game two, but it was too little, too late."

The split leaves Albion and Kalamazoo College tied with 12-12 records against league rivals. Albion, which finishes the regular season with a four-game series against Alma College, owns the tiebreaker after taking three of the four games from the Hornets.

"We don't have to worry about other teams losing as long as we do what we're supposed to do," Carden said of his team's quest to earn a berth in the MIAA Tournament.

Game One

Albion erased a 5-4 deficit with a six-run third inning. Bonofiglio launched a home run, Crawford delivered a two-run double, Brendan Diamond hit a RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Britons tacked on five more runs in the fifth as Fischbach slugged a homerun, Crawford doubled to drive in two runs, Diamond added another RBI single, and Lee Madziar drew a bases loaded walk.

Temrowski (3-3) was summoned from the bullpen in the third inning. He induced an inning-ending double play and kept Olivet scoreless from the fourth to sixth innings.

Game Two

Bonofiglio hit a RBI double and scored on a throwing error as Albion forged a 2-2 tie in the second. Olivet came back with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Fischbach hit his second home run of the day – and fifth of the season – in the fifth inning.

Fischbach is five RBI shy of moving into sixth place among Albion's single-season leaders.
