Stevens: Sunday Split for Baseball at St. John Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (May 4, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team ended its four-game series with Empire 8 Conference foe St. John Fisher College on Sunday with a split in the doubleheader matchup. Stevens dropped Game One, 4-3, but rebounded to take Game Two, 10-4.

Stevens is now 21-13 overall with two more regular season games left on its schedule. The 10 runs scored by the Ducks in Game Two are the second-most runs Fisher has allowed in a single game all season.

Game One: Fisher 4, Stevens 3

The Ducks build an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a fielder's choice and infield error by the Cardinals. Sophomore Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) drove in the first run of the day on a fielder's choice that brought home classmate Jonathan Toro (Sanford, Fla.). During the play, a throwing error allowed junior Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) to cross home for the second run.

Fisher notched its first run in the second inning before Stevens answered right back with one in the third. Yano picked up his second RBI of the game to drive in Toro who reached on a base hit.

Toro had three of the Ducks' five hits in Game One and also stole a base, as did Yano.

The Cardinals plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to come away with another late-innings victory in the weekend series. A double plated the first run for Fisher and then a pair of errors by Stevens allowed two more runs to score.

Senior Matt Buccheri (Little Silver, N.J.) was handed the loss in five innings of work. Buccheri gave up eight hits and four runs (two earned), while striking out three and walking two. Fellow senior Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) recorded one strike out in an inning of relief.

Fisher's Shawn Corrigan tossed a complete game with three punch outs.

Game Two: Stevens 10, Fisher 4

For the third time in the series, the Ducks jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. Hennelly started the one-out rally with a walk and then senior Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) singled. A passed ball moved both runners up and a sacrifice fly by Yano drove in Hennelly. Allen also tagged up to third, and an over throw out of play gave Allen home.

Stevens increased its lead to 4-0 after the fourth and scored once more in the fifth for a 5-0 cushion. A two-run homerun from sophomore Tyler Bush (Bristol, Conn.) brought in sophomore Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and a double from Hennelly in the fifth played Toro.

Fisher responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within one run at 5-4, but the Ducks answered with three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to blow the game wide open.

Toro and juniors Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) all drove in a run in the sixth, while Sieber, Bush and junior Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) scored. Nickels then singled in Bush in the seventh and Nickels eventually scored on a base hit and error on the play off the bat of Mannello.

Sophomore Robert Robbins (Tallahassee, Fla.) earned his fourth win of the season in six innings. Robbins surrendered five hits and walked three with a pair of strikeouts. Sophomore Daniel McIntyre (Lakeway, Texas) gave up one hit in two innings out of the bullpen and Allen tossed the final inning in relief.

After tomorrow's double dip with Lehman College, the Ducks will host a CUNYAC opening round game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Opponent for the game is still to be determined.
