Stevens: Baseball Sweeps Lehman to End Regular Season; CUNYAC Tournament Starts Wednesday

BRONX, N.Y. (May 5, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a sweep at Lehman College in a CUNYAC doubleheader, 8-2, 7-2. Stevens finishes the regular season with a 23-13 overall record and heads into the CUNYAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed.

The Ducks will host a first round game on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Their opponent is still to be determined at this time. An update on the tournament will be sent out tomorrow.

Game One: Stevens 8, Lehman 2

Four Ducks tallied two hits apiece to account of a majority of the 11 base hits in Monday's opener. Freshman Garrett Wells (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) went 2-for-2; junior Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) batted 2-for-3, while sophomore Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and junior Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) both hit 2-for-4.

Wells scored twice and drew two walks; Calleo picked up a pair of doubles with a stolen base, run scored and run batted in. Sieber hit a solo homerun and scored twice and Mannello recorded two runs, two RBI and a double.

Freshman Harrison Kaye (North Brunswick, N.J.) stole a pair of bags to go along with an RBI and walk in a 1-for-3 Game One. Classmate P.J. Wiegartner (Hamilton Square, N.J.) went 1-for-2 with a stolen base, an RBI and was hit by two pitches. Sophomore Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) notched the final hit for the Ducks in a 1-for-4 effort with a run and walk.

Junior Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.) earned the win on the hill for Stevens with eight strikeouts (four looking) in six innings pitched. Marston allowed six hits and two walks in his second victory of the season.

Sophomore Ryan Patterson (Staten Island, N.Y.) fanned two in an inning out of the bullpen.

The Ducks trailed 1-0 after an inning of play, but scored once in the second and three more times in the third to take a 4-1 lead. After Lehman scored again in the bottom of the third, Stevens tallied another run in the fifth and three in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Game Two: Stevens 7, Lehman 2

Freshman Zeph Walters (Diamond Bar, Calif.) tossed a gem in the regular season finale with 10 strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. Walters scattered five hits and allowed two runs (one earned) with a walk. The freshman is now 4-1 on the season.

Sieber drove in the first three runs for the Ducks in Game Two on a double and fielder's choice. He finished the night cap 1-for-4 with two stolen bases.

Wells collected two more hits, going 2-for-3 with a double, run scored, walk and RBI. Freshman Nick Muglia (South Plainfield, N.J.) tallied his first two career hits with a double and a run scored, while sophomore Thomas Sheridan (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored twice and stole a base with a double and RBI.

Calleo and Kaye each had a hit and run scored, while Yano went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

Senior Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) threw the final 1.1 innings of the game and fanned two batters.

Steven jumped out with two runs in its first at bats of Game Two. Lehman pulled to within one in the bottom of the fourth, but the Ducks answered with one of their own in the fifth and four runs in the sixth.
