Spiers Sparks Five-Run Seventh as R-MC Outscores St. Mary's

ASHLAND, Va . – Freshman Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) ripped a two-run double to spark a five-run seventh and give the Randolph-Macon baseball team a 12-8 victory over St. Mary's Sunday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park for a three-game series sweep.

The Yellow Jackets (3-0) held a 7-4 lead after five before Matt Holdefer hit a two-run homer off the scoreboard in the sixth and Connor Goodie belted a two-run double in the seventh to give the Seahawks (0-3) an 8-7 advantage.

Junior Michael Kroll (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) had a one-out single and moved to second on a walk to sophomore Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity). Freshman Christian Buckler (Bumpass, Va./Louisa) pinch-ran for Kroll at second. He and Brown both scored on Spiers' double down the left field line to give R-MC a 9-8 lead. Sophomore Jordan Schmeer (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) added an RBI single and senior Nate Meiners (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's Prep) capped the rally with a two-run double to make it 12-8.

The Seahawks erupted for three in the top of the first. Hunter Mohler had an RBI single and two Seahawks were hit with the bases loaded to give SMC a 3-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets answered with three in the bottom of the first. Schmeer  drew a leadoff walk and moved to second when a sacrifice bunt by Meiners was mishandled. Junior Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) doubled down the left field line to bring home Schmeer and send Meiners to third. Freshman Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and Kroll delivered sacrifice flies to knot the score at 3-3.

SMC reclaimed the lead with an unearned run in the second.

R-MC tied it in the fourth as Brown ripped a one-out double to right and came home on a base hit by Junior Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) to make it 4-4.

The Yellow Jackets took their first lead in the fifth. Meiners had a leadoff single and Maiolo followed with a long home run to left to give R-MC a 6-4 advantage. Migliorini doubled and came in on a base hit by Kroll to make it 7-4.

Maiolo finished with three RBI and batted .727 for the weekend (8 for 11) with six runs and nine RBI.

Freshman Christian Cok (1-0) picked up the win in relief, recording the final two outs of the seventh with one strikeout. Senior JT Williamson (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) fanned four over the final two frames to secure the victory.

Randolph-Macon is scheduled to host RPI in a three-game series next weekend. The teams will play a single game on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 12 noon and a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 12 noon at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
