Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore Lane Miles threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out eight, and sophomore center fielder Tanner Nishioka and junior first baseman Simon Rosenbaum added homers, as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team started out its three-game series with Whittier with an 11-1 win over the Poets on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field. 

The game was shortened to seven innings due to the SCIAC's 10-run rule. With the win, the Sagehens are now 9-3 overall on the year, including 6-1 in the SCIAC. Whittier falls to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play. 

Miles allowed only a solo home run to Malcolm Macey with two outs in the fourth inning with the Sagehens ahead 10-0 in an otherwise dominant outing. His other three hits allowed were singles, and he didn't allow a runner past first base, other than the home run. 

Pomona-Pitzer gave Miles all the offense he would need in the first inning, scoring three times with two outs and nobody on base. Senior designated hitter Jake Bruml started the rally with a single, and after senior right fielder Mark Okuma drew a walk, Rosenbaum hit a line drive single for the first run of the game. Senior third baseman E.J. Lopez followed with an infield single to shortstop, and Okuma raced all the way around from second when the throw to first was late. Senior second baseman Kenny Rabin then capped off the inning with an RBI single to make the score 3-0. 

The Sagehens then broke it open with seven runs in the bottom of the third, including a three-run homer from Nishioka. Okuma had an RBI single to score Bruml, who led off with a double, freshman left fielder Adam Hinthorne (making his first start) had a two-run single, and sophomore catcher added an RBI double before Nishioka's homer.

Malcolm Macey broke up the shutout in the fourth, but Rosenbaum answered with a solo shot in the bottom half to match the run and keep the 10-run rule in effect. It was the fifth homer already this season for Rosenbaum, who earned first-team All-America honors last year. Rosenbaum was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI on the day, while Jordan was 2-for-3 and Bruml was 2-for-4.  

The teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader at Whittier tomorrow, weather permitting.
