Whittier, Calif. - Senior shortstop Sam Fox hit the first three home runs of his career, two in the opener and one in the nightcap, as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team completed a three-game weekend sweep of Whittier with 13-0 and 6-2 wins in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

With the sweep, the Sagehens improve to 11-3 overall on the season and 8-1 in the SCIAC, putting them in first place after three conference weekends. Whittier slips to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in league play with the losses.

Fox, a four-year starting shortstop, hit his first two career homers in the opener, when he tallied six RBI, and then started the scoring in the nightcap with a two-run shot in the third to put Pomona-Pitzer ahead 2-0.  He finished the day 5-for-10 at the plate, with four runs scored and eight runs batted in.

The Sagehens also received strong pitching, as junior Cameron Yen tossed a four-hit shutout in the opener, and senior Jake Bruml took a shutout into the seventh in the nightcap (after throwing a shutout last weekend against Redlands). Whittier finally scored its first runs of the day in the seventh to close to within 4-2, but sophomore David Gerics came on for a two-inning save, as Pomona-Pitzer added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth to win 6-2.

In the lopsided win in the opener, the Sagehens also had big days from sophomore center fielder Tanner Nishioka (2-for-4, four RBI) and senior second baseman Kenny Rabin (3-for-4, two RBI). Pomona-Pitzer added 17 more hits in the nightcap, as Bruml was 4-for-6, while junior first baseman Simon Rosenbaum and senior third baseman E.J. Lopez were both 3-for-5.

Bruml and sophomore catcher Kevin Jordan had RBI hits to make the score 4-0, and Lopez and Nishioka added the insurance RBIs in the eighth and ninth, respectively, as Gerics struck out three in the final two innings to close the door.

Pomona-Pitzer has a bye week from SCIAC competition next weekend, and will be back in action for non-league games against Ithaca next Sunday and Monday at Alumni Field.
