Union, N.J. (2/28/15) – Southpaw Emilio Calderon tossed eight innings of one hit, shutout ball to help the Kean University baseball team open the 2015 season with a 3-1 win over Eastern Connecticut State University.

After a slow start to the matchup, the Cougars (1-0) pushed across a run in the fourth as senior Andy Lopez laced a one out double down the line (his first of two doubles on the day).  Junior Ryan Kelley erased the shutout with a single through the right side for a 1-0 lead.

Junior Matt Meleo started off the fifth by being hit with a pitch and moved to third off a Tyler Heisch double down the line.  Meleo would later come around to score off an RBI groundout from junior Ryan Reitmeyer

Kean pushed the advantage to three with an RBI single from junior Sal Taormina in the seventh.

The #19/17 Warriors (0-1) broke up the shutout in the ninth as Kyle Hart lined a two out single to left center, bringing home Ivan Guadalupe who reached via a leadoff walk.

Calderon (1-0) allowed just one single while striking out five and walking one.  Senior Charles Thielmann picked up the one inning save with two strikeouts.

Lopez, Heisch and Kelly all finished with two hits apiece.

The Cougars return to action on Sunday when they face FDU-Florham at noon.
