Elizabethtown unbeaten in six following sweep of Apprentice School

VERO BEACH, Fla. – While snow fell in Lancaster County Thursday, Elizabethtown baseball continued to enjoy the Florida sun. The Blue Jays swept The Apprentice School 6-3, 6-3 at Historic Dodgertown and now have their first six game winning streak in five seasons.

Luke Gatti and Brian Portillo drove in two runs on two hits in support of winnign pitcher Zack Tomasko.

Elizabethtown (6-1) connected for four runs on five hits in the third to break up a scoreless game.

Austin Kibler, Alex Holbert and Tyler Weary all reached on singles in the big inning, before Gatti and Portillo hit consecutive two-run doubles to send the Blue Jays on their way.

The Builders (2-3) got within 4-3 after scoring two in the bottom of the sixth, but E-town added to its lead after scoring twice in the seventh. Dylan Manning was credited with an RBI the hard way, as he was hit with a pitch from pitcher Sam Massie.

Tomasko had Apprentice off balance for much of his start. Eight of the 10 outs he recorded were strikeouts, and he gave up just one hit along with one run. Josh Kwak worked 2.2 innings, while Taras Letnaunchyn struck out the side in the seventh for his second save in as many tries.

Weary, Gatti and Holbert were all 2-for-3 at the plate for the Jays. Holbert and Weary also scored twice. Austin Kibler went 1-for-3 with a run scored, as E-town outhit Apprentice 8-4.

Reigning Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Week Kristopher Davis made his second start of the season and it was another impressive one.

The senior from Doylestown allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out six to earn the complete game victory.

Sean Jones, who was 3-for-4 and finished a home run shy of the cycle, opened the scoring with an RBI double that scored Holbert in the first inning.

Apprentice got a rally going in the top of the fourth. Singles from Mark Labrador and Christian Burton, and a walk by Lee Rossi loaded the bases for Ryan Hendrickson. The senior right fielder, who had a mere two at-bats last season, unloaded them with a three-run double to right that gave the Builders a 3-1 lead.

Elizabethtown has shown itself to be quite resilient early on and it needed to be Thursday. Following Apprentice's three-run fourth, the Blue Jays countered with three in their half of the inning to regain the lead, 4-3.

Jones led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Parke Martin's double to left. Frank Canuso recorded an RBI fielder's choice and later scored the go-ahead run.

The Blue Jays extended their lead to 6-3 in the sixth on Gatti's second two-run double of the afternoon.

Six different players contributed to the offense's nine hits in game two. Jones and Holbert (2-for-3) led the way with multi-hit peformances. Defensively, the Jays had a flawless day committing no errors.

Hendrickson and Buron paced the Builders' offense with two hits each.

The 2015 spring break trip comes to a close with a single nine-inning game against Northwestern (Minn.) Friday. The early morning start has a 9 a.m. first pitch.
