Oxy Wins Opening SCIAC Series

LOS ANGELES — Devon DeRaad went 4 for 4 win a home run and Riley James pitched seven solid innings, leading the Tigers to a win in Game 3 and a 2-1 series victory over Chapman this weekend. DeRaad is off to an incredible start in 2015, hitting five home runs in his first six games.

The Tigers improve to 4 -2 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC play. Chapman drops to 3-3 and 1-2.

Next Game: Oxy travels to Pasadena next Friday to face Caltech at 2:30 pm before returning home Saturday to finish the series with a doubleheader.

Top Performers:

Occidental

Devon DeRaad - 5 for 8 (4 for 4 in Game 3) with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored, and three RBIs. 

Riley James - Earned the win as Oxy's starter in Game 3, pitching seven innings with no walks, five strikeouts, five hits, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.

A.J. Libunao - 3  for 8 with two doubles, two RBIs, and a run scored.

Charlie Caccamo - 4 for 8, one RBI, and one run scored.

Walker Marks - 3 for 7 with two runs scored and three stolen bases.

Brady Fuller - 3 for 8 with an RBI and one run scored

Scott Ericksen - One RBI and one inning pitched with a strikeout.

Chapman 

Tyler Cook - 3 for 7 with two runs scored and two RBIs

Matt Smith - Winning pitcher for Chapman in Game 2. Threw seven innings with one run, four hits, and one walk.

Tim Alhanati - Went 3 for 3 in Game 2.

John Wiehe - One RBI in Game 2

Forrest Wiederman - 2 for six with one run scored.

Game 1: Chapman 6, Occidental 3

The Tigers got on the board first with Brady Fuller scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Scott Ericksen in the top of the second inning.

The Panthers responded quickly in the bottom of the inning when John Wiehe hit in Jared Love on a sacrifice fly.

Chapman scored four more runs in the fifth capped by a Tyler Cook home run and added another run in the 7th.

Walker Marks scored for the Tigers in the top of the ninth and Libunao hit in Jeffrey Johnson, but it wasn't enough to catch up to the Panthers.

Game 2: Occidental 8 , Chapman 2

Riley James took control of the game on the mound, shutting out the Panthers in the first three innings. Chapman scored a couple runs in the fourth inning but James settled back down and held them through to the seventh.

The Tigers jupmed on the Panthers early, scoring one run in the first inning, and four runs in the second. The rally started when Ryan Fuhrman scored on a passed ball and was followed by Caccamo scoring on a sacrafice bunt from Libuano. DeRaad started off his day with an RBI-single to right field to score Johnathan Brooks, and Fuller finished it off hitting in DeRaad on a single to center.

In the top of the fourth, DeRaad extened the lead with his fifth bomb of the year.
