LETU Baseball Splits Doubleheader with HSU

A four-run seventh inning in the nightcap gave the LeTourneau University a doubleheader split with host Hardin-Simmons University on Sunday in Abilene. The YellowJackets lost game one, 2-1 in 12 innings and rallied for the 4-2 win in game two. In both games, LETU got strong solid pitching from its starters – Justin Jenkins(game 1) and Cody Whitley (game 2). The doubleheader split puts LETU at 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the American Southwest Conference. 

Hardin-Simmons held a 2-0 lead until the seventh inning when LeTourneau plated four runs on five hits for the 4-2 come-from-behind win. LETU senior starter Cody Whitley scattered eight hits and two runs over six innings to pick up his first win of the season. Junior reliever Josh Gimre retired the Cowboys in order in the ninth for the save.
 
Offensively, LETU stranded 10 runners on base as they pounded out 14 hits in the win. Senior Ryan Bertram had a season-high three hits and three teammates – Taylor EmpkeyKyle Jacobs and Jon Lewis each added two in the win.
 
Trailing 2-0 in the seventh, the YellowJackets loaded the bases for senior David Perkins, who had a hit taken away from him in the 5th when de Luca made a sensational catch, got the YellowJackets on the scoreboard with a single through the left side to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. Then, Yates reached on a fielder's choice to score Empkey, who had singled earlier in the inning and tied the game at 2. Then, off the bench, LETU went to Brandon Applewhite, who delivered a double to left center scoring Jacobs, who reached on a bunt single earlier in the inning. With its first lead of the series, the YellowJackets stretched the lead on a RBI double by Ryan Bertram for what proved to be the final margin.
 
The series will be on the line as the two teams will wrap it up on Monday at noon.
