No. 16 Marietta doubles up Montclair State 10-5

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — The No. 16 ranked Marietta College baseball team evened its season record with a 10-5 victory over Montclair State University Thursday (March 12) morning in the Snowbird Classic. The Pioneers are now 3-3 on the season. Montclair State falls to 0-5 overall.

Sophomore Tommy Crowl (2-0) is quickly establishing himself as Marietta's No. 2 starters with his second straight quality outing. Crowl threw 7.0 innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on 10 hits. He walked one and struck out four. Freshman Austin Eaton allowed two runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of relief.

Marietta used three big innings on offense to defeat the Red Hawks. The Etta Express scored three runs in the third, four in the seventh and three more in the ninth.

Tyler Packanik and Chris Winpigler drove in runs in the third inning with RBI base hits. Winpigler added a second run-scoring hit in the seventh, while Brandon Papp laced a two-run single to center.

Senior Ryan Hanahan, the Ohio Athletic Conference leader in triples a year ago, smacked a two-run triple in the Pioneers' ninth inning rally. He would later scored Marietta's final run of the game on a balk.

Winpigler finished 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Pioneers. Packanik, Tim McCoy, Chris Petrucci and Michael Barnabei each had two hits in the game.

Montclair scored a single run in the second, fifth and sixth innings and trailed 10-3 heading into its final at bat. Kevin Alonso walked to lead off the ninth and came around to score on a two-run home run off the bat of Ivan Olivera.

Michael Manfra (0-1) started on the mound for the Red Hawks and went 6.2 innings in the losing effort. He gave up four runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Louis Pimpinella and Taylor Parsons each pitched in relief.

Marietta is back in action on Friday (March 13) with a pair of games. The Pioneers play Ohio Wesleyan University at 9:00 a.m. and Wabash College at 12:00 p.m.
