UMHB rolls past McMurry 13-7

Abilene, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team kept its hot streak going, jumping on McMurry early and then holding on for a 13-7 victory over the Warhawks in a slugfest Friday night in Abilene. The Cru wins for the fifth straight time and sixth time in the last seven games to improve to 7-6 on the season. The loss snaps McMurry's 10-game winning streak and drops the Warhawks to 13-4 on the year.

 

UMHB jumped on top early with a five-run first inning. Chase Burrow singled home the first two runs before scoring on Emery Atkisson's RBI groundout. Will Stafford's two-out, two-run single drove in the final two runs of the frame. Justin Dingman doubled home two runs and Heath Spencer added an RBI single as the Cru pushed it to 8-0 in the top of the second. McMurry scored single runs in the third and fourth to cut the gap to 8-2 before Rob Loewe ripped a solo homer in the top of the sixth to give UMHB a 9-2 edge. Burrow added a two-run double and Loewe scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-2 UMHB in the top of the seventh. The Warhawks tightened it up with four runs in the bottom of the seventh and a single run in the bottom of the eighth. Burrow the ripped a triple and scored on Dingman's single in the top of the ninth to provide the final margin.

 

Aaron Barteau earned the win for the Cru to improve to 2-0 on the season. Barteau struck out seven while scattering 12 hits over six and a third innings. Burrow, Dingman and Spencer all had three hits apiece to lead a 19-hit attack for UMHB. Burrow drove in four runs and Dingman had three RBI. Trevor Ragsdale took the loss for McMurry to fall to 0-1 after giving up eight runs in one and a third innings. Cody Howard had three hits and four RBI for the Warhawks in the game.

 

The two teams will close out the non-conference series with a 2:00 PM single game Saturday in Abilene. UMHB will then return to American Southwest Conference play with a three-game series at the University of the Ozarks next weekend.
