Hiram splits doubleheader with Millikin (Ill.)

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Hiram College baseball team split a doubleheader against Millikin (Ill.), falling in the first game but winning the nightcap on Friday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Classic.

The Big Blue (3-2) took the first game 4-1 but the Terriers (3-6) won the second game 10-5.

In the second game, Millikin scored three times in the top of the first inning, but Hiram responded with eight unanswered runs.

The Terriers scored once in the first innning on a RBI double from junior Trevor Foster(Warren/Champion).

Hiram then plated four more runs in the second inning, all coming with two outs, to take a 5-3 lead.

Freshman Riley Harpster (Ashland/Hillsdale) laced a 1-out double and moved to third on a sac bunt by sophomore Brandon Gros (Ravenna/Kent Roosevelt). 

Sophomore Ryan Fedor (Mantua/Crestwood) drew a walk and senior Jaren Bell (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) singled to score Harpster.

Senior Jeff Segal (West Bloomfield, Mich./North Farmington) followed with a walk to load the bases. Sophomore Eric Martin came up and ripped a double to score all three runs and put Hiram in front.

In the third, Fedor hit a sac fly to score senior Ron DeAmicis (Austintown/Fitch) and make the score 6-3. Bell would follow with a 2-RBI single to expand Hiram's lead to 8-3.

Millikin answered with a run in the fourth, but Hiram came right back in the bottom half of the frame with a run on a single by Foster that scored Segal.

The Terriers tacked on another run in the sixth on another RBI single by Foster.

The Big Blue added a run in the seventh, but could get no closer.

Foster finished the game 3-for-4 with 3-RBI's and Bell finished 2-for-3 with 2-RBI's and a run scored.

Sophomore Brandon Chesmar (Elyria/Amherst Steele) gave up four runs over six innings to pick up his first win of the season.

In the first game, Millikin scored a run in the first, but Hiram tied the game at 1-1 in the third, on a double from freshman Phil Ward (Garfield Heights) that scored Bell.

The Big Blue added two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to pick up the 4-1 victory.

Bell and Segal each had two hits in the game for Hiram.

Senior J.T. Taylor (Niles/Niles McKinley) fired a complete game, giving up just one earned run and striking out three.

Hiram will close out its spring trip on Saturday, when it takes Augustana (Ill.) in a single game at 9 a.m.
