Hard-fought sweep for Tommies

It wasn't all smooth sailing, but Tommie baseball recorded a 17-9, 8-7 sweep of Concordia (Wis.) Sunday in Tucson to stay unbeaten.

No. 2-ranked St. Thomas is 5-0 on its season-opening trip, including Friday's two one-run, extra-inning wins over top-25 Division III teams. The Toms play Monday at 11 a.m. Minnesota time against Southwestern (Tex.) to close their Arizona games.

In Sunday's opener, Concordia led 6-2 and 7-4 before UST scored 11 runs in the fifth inning. Freshman Hunter Hart, senior Ryan Gerber and junior Waylon Bemboom each homered to help break open the game. Freshman Jake Smith had three hits and four RBI and sophomore Drew Miller, Gerber and Brady Johnson each had two hits. Senior Greg Clute, the first of three relief pitchers, took the victory.

In game two, UST broke to an 8-3 lead but surrendured four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Eric Veglahn came on to pitch with the tying runner on base. He struck out two and got a game-ending pop up with the tying run on third base for the save. Sophomore Tyler Feyereisen allowed one earned run in five innings to get the pitching victory. Miller and Hart each had two hits and Miller drove in two runs with a triple.
