More news about: Webster

The #22 ranked Webster University baseball team won its home opener, defeating the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 10-2, on March 18 at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, IL.  The Gorloks fell behind, 2-0, in the first inning but would score the next 10 runs for the win.  Isaac Behme picked up his first win of the year on the mound, and Dylan Rajkovich went deep for Webster.

The win was the Gorloks' sixth straight, piggy-backing on the five-game streak it brought back from its spring break trip.  Behme (SR, Harrisburg, IL/Harrisburg HS) went five innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks, and struck out three.  He gave up two hits in the Titans two-run first, and got out of a first and third jam with one out in the second, courtesy of a 6-4-3 double play.

Behme then settled down over the next three innings, retiring nine in a row and giving up just two singles before giving way to Dylan Dean Smith (SR, Albion, IL/Edwards County HS) in the top of the sixth.  Behme evened his season record at 1-1 with the win.  Smith went two scoreless innings, and has still been unscored on in 10 innings pitched in four games this season.  Mitch Stefani (JR, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) and Zach Schneider (SR, Grayslake, IL/Warren Township HS) both pitched a scoreless inning each to close out the contest.

Webster got on the board with a pair of walks, a wild pitch, and a groundout in the first, but opened it up with three runs in the second.  Dylan Rajkovich (JR, Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg HS) led off with a walk and back to back singles by Matt Wollnik (SO, Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) and Alec Bahnick (SO, Owensboro, KY/Owensboro Catholic HS) brought him home.  Mike Golich (FR, Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) singled in Wollnik, and a Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) sac fly scored Bahnick to make it 4-2, Webster.

Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) doubled in Kyle Uhrich (JR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) in the third to make it 5-2. Rajkovich increased the Gorloks' lead to 7-2 by sending a sinking line drive just over the right field wall for a two-run homer in the fifth, scoring Kammer who had singled to lead off the inning.  Webster would score a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth inning for the 10-2 final.

Rajkovich was 1-2, with a home run, two RBIs, two runs, and a walk.  Kammer was 2-5 with a double, RBI, stolen base, and run scored, and Thomas was 3-3 with an RBI and stolen base.  Thomas is now batting .425 on the season.  Charlie Gandolfi (SR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) wound up 1-2, with three runs scored, a stolen base, and reached twice on HBPs.  Golich was 2-5 with an RBI and run scored, improving his average to .391.  Uhrich was 1-3, with three runs scored and two sacrifice flies for the game.

With 13 hits on the afternoon, the Gorloks have reached double digits in hits in six of their last seven games.  Webster, ranked #22 by d3baseball.com and #20 by the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball, is 7-4 on the season.

Webster opens play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a double header at GCS vs. Iowa Wesleyan College on March 21.  The Gorloks then host the Tigers and Illinois Wesleyan University for single games on March 22 at GCS.
