FROSTBURG, Md. – The eighth-ranked Frostburg State baseball team used extra inning heroics to complete the Capital Athletic Conference sweep of #1/3 Salisbury to earn a share of the regular season crown and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, next week.

The No. 1 seed for Frostburg is its first since joining the CAC in the 2011 season.

After rolling to a big 10-0 win the first game to deal Salisbury its first loss of the year, the Bobcats (26-3, 16-2) needed extra innings to complete the sweep. The Bobcats and Sea Gulls (21-2, 16-2 CAC) were tied 7-7 after Salisbury used a three-run eighth to knot the game. Freshman Tyler Hoffman came out in relief in the ninth for Frostburg and got a 1-2-3 inning before the Bobcats went down in order to force extras.

Salisbury got the winning run in scoring position in the 10th but after an intentional walk to Jordan Gowe put two on, Hoffman got Bobby Sanzone to fly out down the right field foul line to end the frame.

Once again, Frostburg State went down in order in the 10th and the game headed into the 11th inning. Hoffman worked quickly and efficiently in the inning, throwing just six pitches, to keep the Sea Gulls off the board. Senior Zach Weiss worked a seven-pitch walk to lead off the 11th. Classmate Ricky Brady appeared to be the second out of the frame with a grounder to short, but the Sea Gull fielder threw the ball away and allowed Brady to reach second and Weiss third. With one out and  the winning run 90 feet from home, junior Zach Keeler sent a fly ball deep to right field to bring home Weiss for the victory.

Salisbury got on the board first in the night cap as Kyle Hayman came home on a sacrifice bunt from Sanzone for the 1-0 Salisbury lead.

After the two teams traded scoreless second and third innings, the Bobcats rallied with two outs to put five runs on the board in the fourth and take a 5-1 lead. Junior Connor Cooper tied the game with one swing of the bat as he launched his third home run of the season over the right field fence. Senior Lane Farmer followed with a single to third and moved to second on a single from sophomore JT Tipton. Junior Jamaal Windom wore the second pitch he saw to load the bases for the Bobcats. Senior Ricky Castro worked a four-pitch walk to bring home Farmer and give Frostburg its first lead of the game. Weiss reached first and advanced to second on a field error by the Sea Gull second baseman Tipton, Windom and Castro all came home as he kicked the ball away to clear the bases.

After starting pitcher freshman Greg Schneider got a pair of strikeouts to open the fifth, the right hander walked Pete Grasso but Gowe hit a ground ball to second to get Grasso at second and end the inning.
Tipton drove in the Bobcats' sixth run of the game with a single to right center to bring home Cooper and give FSU a 6-1 cushion after five.

Salisbury rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth on four hits to cut the Bobcat lead to 6-4 but junior Nick Huff got a ground ball to end the inning and limit the damage.

Farmer pushed the lead to 7-4 with his fifth home run of the year and the second Bobcat long ball of the game and fourth of the doubleheader. Farmer took a 0-2 pitch over the left field fence.

Salisbury's three-run eighth tied the game and set up the extra inning heroics. Hoffman earned his first win on the mound for FSU after going 3.0 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit and one walk.

Frostburg held the Sea Gulls to their lowest hit (6) and run (0) total of the season the doubleheader's opening game and posted the second-most runs against the Sea Gulls by an opponent (10) this season.

With two outs, senior Nick Walker drove the second pitch of his at bat over the left field fence to give FSU a 2-0 lead. The Bobcats tacked on another run in the third as Walker came home on a wild pitch to push their lead to 3-0.

Frostburg broke open the game with four runs in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. Walker led off the frame with a single up the middle and came around to score on Brady's double to right center after stealing third. Keeler singled down the right field line to score Brady and chase the Sea Gull starter. The Bobcats welcomed the SU reliever with an RBI-single from Farmer to bring around Keeler. With two outs, Castro doubled down the left field line to score Cooper and give FSU a 7-0 lead.

The Bobcats scored their final runs of the game with three runs in the sixth. Walker led off the frame with a single to right and Brady launched a ball over the center field fence for the Bobcats' second home run of the game. Junior Jeremy Remalia drove home senior Nick McElfish later in the inning for the final run of the game as FSU led 10-0.

Senior starting pitcher Bennett Schiltz found himself in trouble in the seventh as Salisbury built its only real scoring threat. After a walk loaded the bases with one out for the Sea Gulls, Scott Ardoin lined a ball to Tipton at second and he flipped it to Brady standing on the bag to first to get Kevin Dean caught in the double play and end the inning.

Sophomore Jake Stephens came out in relief of Schiltz in the eighth and faced the minimum number of batters with help from a double play ball to close out the game for Frostburg.

Schilitz earned his eighth win of the year on the mound for Frostburg after going 7.0 innings and allowing just five hits and four walks while striking out five.

Walker led the Bobcats with six hits and four runs between the two games while Brady and Weiss each collected three RBI.
