BROOKLYN, N.Y. – After numerous postponements and cancellations the Maritime baseball team got back on the field on Sunday afternoon as the team played a non-conference doubleheader against the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears at Lincoln High School.

The Bears took the first game by the score of 9-2, while the Privateers bounced back in the second game by the score of 11-5.

Senior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) had 2 RBIs on the afternoon as well.

On the hill, senior Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) got the start in the first game and pitched three innings before being lifted for rookieAnthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman).

Freshman Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) got the start in the second game and earned his first career win as he allowed three runs over four innings of work as he struck out six. Freshman Brian Hughes (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) threw an inning followed by senior James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) tossing two scoreless innings to seal the win in the second game for the Privateers.

In the opener, Alsdorf mowed down the first two batters he faced before allowing two runners on but got out of the inning unscathed. In the second inning, he allowed a pair of runs to score as the Bears took an early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Maritime got the runs right back as Longo singled and then made it around to third base. Junior Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) then tripled in Longo to cut the lead in half at 2-1, Deddo then collected a base knock to chase home Tyler with the tying run.

St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) tacked on two more in the third and one more in the fourth. Maritime got out of the fourth inning with slick fielding as the team turned an around-the-horn double-play. After Alsdorf was listed, D'Ancona was touched up for four runs in the top of the sixth as the Bears had four runs on four hits and including a pair on a ground-rule double.

In their last chance at the plate, Sollin and junior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) got the inning started off with a pair of walks. Senior Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) later came up with two outs as a pinch hitter and brought home Sollin, but was erased trying to stretch the play into a double as the Privateers fell by a 9-3 score.

The second game saw Stuart take the hill for his second career outing, and pitched well as he allowed just a pair of walks in the opening inning.

The Maritime bats put the Privateers ahead by a 1-0 score as junior Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) walked with one out, and then moved to third on a McLaughlin single. Sollin was up next and collected a base hit to centerfield to put Maritime up by one. Stuart then allowed the Bears to tie the game as St. Joseph's scored on a groundout.
Maritime regained the lead in the third inning as McLaughlin hit a home run with one out to give Stuart a lead once again. However, St. Joseph's plated a pair of runs to take its first lead of the game at 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Longo led off the frame with a round-tripper. Freshman Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) then walked, and two batters later, sophomore Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) reached on an error to put two on with one out. Up next was Deddo, who doubled to chase Schiavoni home and move Stewart to third.

Woodburn then walked to load the bases, and two batters later, Sollin walked to force home the third Privateer run of the frame as Maritime took a 5-3 advantage.
Hughes came on to pitch in the top of the fifth and allowed just one hit while stranding a pair to bring the hot Maritime bats to the plate once again in the bottom of the inning.

Longo walked and Schiavoni was plunked by a pitch to put the first two men on base, senior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach)sacrificed them both into scoring position, followed by a Stewart single to bring home Longo. Up next was Deddo, who launched a three-run home run over the right field wall to blow the game open for the Privateers, with Maritime taking command by a 9-3 lead.

Hughes ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning as the first three batters reached, forcing Maritime to bring on senior James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) in relief. The senior sidewinder retired two on one pitch with a double play back to the box, but did allow two inherited runners to score as St. Joseph's closed the gap, 9-5.

The Privateers got the two runs back in the bottom half of the inning as Sollin led off with a double, and two batters later was chased home by a Longo single. Schiavoni then followed with a base knock to centerfield as the Privateers took back its six-run lead.

Very allowed just one hit and struck a batter in the top of the seventh inning, but was able to settle down as he sealed the victory for the Privateers by a score of 11-5.
