Marietta sweeps Wilmington to earn No. 2 seed in OAC Tourney

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament after sweeping Wilmington College Saturday (May 2) afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium.  The Pioneers took game one, 6-0, and the nightcap, 12-3.

The Etta Express improves to 24-15 on the season and finish 12-6 in the OAC. Wilmington ends the season with a 3-34 overall record and 0-18 in conference play.

Junior Christian Herstine (6-3) tossed 7.0 shutout innings to get the win in game one. Coupled with his complete-game shutout at John Carroll, he has now worked 16.0 straight scoreless innings. Herstine allowed five hits, all singles, and struck out eight. He didn't allow a Quakers runner to reach third base.

Freshman David Stover worked the final 2.0 innings and allowed one hit and walked one.

Marietta scored two runs in the second inning for the early lead. Chris Petrucci led off with a single and eventually scored on an error by the Wilmington second baseman. Christian Demko drove in MC's second run with a single through the left side of the infield.

Senior Ryan Hanahan made it 4-0 with a two-run blast over the centerfield wall 410-feet away from home plate. Mitch Geers reached on a one-out single and Hanahan followed with the long ball.

Geers tripled in the seventh and the scored on a wild pitch for a 5-0 Pioneer lead. Petrucci accounted for Marietta's final run. He singled to lead off the eighth inning, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Demko worked a walk and then the Pioneers executed a perfect double steal scoring Petrucci.

Wilmington junior Corey Walker (0-7) went the distance on the mound. He allowed six runs on eight hits. Walker walked four and struck out five.

Hanahan finished 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBI. Geers was also 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Petrucci chipped in with a pair of singles, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Playing in their final game at Schaly Stadium, the senior quartet of Geers, Hanahan, Demko and Chris Winpigler went a combined 9-for-16 in game two. Hanahan smack another two-run nhome run giving him a team-leading nine for the season, while Geers and Winpigler each had a double.

The Quakers took the early lead with a run in the first inning. But, the lead was short lived as the Pioneers answered with one in the home half of the inning and three more in the second.

In the first, Hanahan reached on a two-out single. Winpigler then lined a double to the wall in right field scoring Hanahan all the way from first base. Petruccci ripped a two-run triple into the right-center gap and then scored on a Geers double in the second inning.

After two scoreless innings, Wilmington plated a run in the fifth and the Pioneers added two in the bottom of the frame. Hanahan led off with a single and then Winpigler was hit by a pitch. After a sac bunt from Tyler Packanik, Doug Bennett delivered a two-run pinch-hit single.

Sophomore Tommy Crowl (5-3) started on the mound for Marietta and got the win working 5.0 innings Crowl allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Corey Whaley was charged with one run in 0.0 innings pitched, while Ian Luttrell got the Pioneers out of trouble in the sixth. Luttrell tossed 3.0 innings and allowed no runs on one hit. He walked one and struck out one. Matt Yates threw the ninth and gave up one hit.

Winpigler picked up two moe RBI in the sixth with a single through the left side that scored Petrucci and Demko. Packanik made it 10-3 with a two-run double to left field. Hanahan capped the scoring with his two-run homer in the eighth.

Billy Foster (1-6) took the loss for the Quakers. He started and worked 5.0 innings. Foster allowed eight runs on 10 hits and struck out three. Three other Quakers toed the rubber in the game.

Hanahan led the Pioneer attack with three hits, four runs scored and two RBI. Winpigler had two hits and drove in three runs and scored twice. Geers, Petrucci and Demko each had two hits as well.

Marietta will be the No. 2 seed in next week's OAC Tournament being hosted by Heidelberg.
