Spalding splits double header with Baldwin Wallace

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team faced off against No. 19 ranked Baldwin Wallace in a double header at Derby City Field. Baldwin Wallace took the first gam by a score of 10-7. Mark Zimmerman (1-0) got the win, while Jimmy Keating (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Spalding bounced back to win the nightcap, 13-4. Aaron Mitchell (1-0) earned the win and Javier Guerra (1) got the save. Danny Cody (0-1) was given the loss. Spalding improved to 2-2 overall, while Baldwin Wallace fell to 2-3 on the season.
 
Korie Vire had a great performance between the two games as he went 6-for-9 with one walk, two runs, five RBI's, and three stolen bases. Blake Patterson went 3-for-9 and tallied four RBI's through the two games.
 
Spalding got the scoring started in the bottom of the second. Brad Speeks hit a single to right, then advanced on a passed ball to move into scoring position. Patterson singled into left and knocked Speek in from second to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. Baldwin Wallace answered right back in the top of the third on a Cole Nieto RBI single to left to tie the game. In the bottom half, Clay Kelly was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a groundout. Vire was able to bring him home on an RBI single to left field and Spalding led 2-1 after three innings. The Yellow Jackets used a three-run fifth inning to jump back in the lead at 4-2, including a 2 RBI double from Alex Marcum. After Spalding failed to score in the bottom half, Baldwin Wallace put four more runs in the top of the sixth and stretched their lead to 8-2. In the bottom half, Spalding got one back after Speek scored on a wild pitch. Baldwin Wallace extended their lead to 9-3 after scoring on a wild pitch. The bottom of the seventh saw a small rally from Spalding. Vire doubled down the left field line to bring Clay Kelly in and advance Kam Bruner to third. Patterson was walked with the bases loaded to bring in another, but they would leave the bases loaded as they trailed, 9-5. The Yellow Jackets got a run back in the eighth to lead 10-5. Spalding would try to rally in the bottom of the ninth. Vire had an RBI single to left-center and Speek reached on a fielder's choice and got the runner home from third and they cut the Baldwin Wallace lead down to 10-7. The Golden Eagles would not be able to complete the comeback however, as they grounded into a double-play to end the game.
 
Spalding started the second game of the double header with an RBI sacrifice fly by Matt Harper to take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles used a three run third to extend their lead to 4-0. Vire, Bruner, and Speek were all credited with RBI's. Spalding continued to add to their lead in the sixth when Casey Gibson singled into right field, driving in Bruner. Austin Drake knocked in another on a sacrifice fly to center field and Spalding led 6-0. Baldwin Wallace finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth and trailed 6-1. Spalding picked the run back up in the top of the seventh when Kelly scored on an error. The Yellow Jackets continued to match runs in the bottom half on an RBI single and cut the lead to 7-2. Spalding exploded in the top of the eighth in an attempt to put the game away. Drake got a sac fly to right field, followed by a Woodruff single to center that brought Woodall home. Vire singled up the middle to bring Woodruff home after he advanced to second on a throwing error on the previous at-bat. Bruner singled to right center which saw Vire come around from second. Patterson finished the scoring with a 2 RBI single and the Golden Eagles led 13-2 after 7.5 innings. Baldwin Wallace scratched across a run in the bottom of the eighth as well as putting another run up in the bottom of the ninth. In the end though, it was Spalding who would come out on top.
 
Spalding will be back in action this Friday, March 4th when they welcome No. 12 Heidelberg to Derby City Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 pm EST.
