Chargers Score 35 Runs in Rout of Valley Forge

The Lancaster Bible baseball team won its second straight game on Thursday as the Chargers crushed Valley Forge, 35-0 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Chargers are now 4-5 this season and are 3-2 on their spring break trip with one game remaining. The loss dropped Valley Forge to 0-5 this season.

How it Happened: Lancaster Bible scored in just three innings, but posted huge numbers in those innings. After a scoreless first inning, the Chargers erupted for 13 runs in the bottom of the second and hit four home runs in the process. Junior Justin Taylor continued his scorching-hot start to the season as he belted a two-run and a three-run home run in the inning, bringing his season total to seven. Catcher Doug Gundlach and Silas Stephens also hit home runs in the inning, the first of each of their collegiate careers. Gundlach's bomb was a grand slam which gave Lancaster Bible a 9-0 lead. 

Lancaster Bible scored seven more runs in the bottom half of the third inning highlighted by senior Erich Carroll's grand slam which made it 20-0. Freshman Jensen King also added a two-run double in the inning and sophomore Josh Mayer also doubled in the inning.

The Chargers' biggest inning came in the fifth as Lancaster Bible scored 15 runs and smashed 10 hits. Lancaster Bible sent 21 batters to the plate in the inning which freshman Tyler Greenly led off with his first collegiate home run. Greenly had three hits in the inning and knocked in three runs as well. Jacob Schenckreached base three times in the inning as well and had two RBI. Freshman Tyler Newton walked twice in the inning and scored two runs. 

Inside the Box Score: Every Lancaster Bible batter that came to the plate had at least one hit...Gundlach and Stephens each had four hits...Gundlach finished 4-for-8 with five RBI and four runs scored...Stephens was 4-for-5 with two walks, three runs scored and three RBI...Greenly and Brian Niedergall were each 3-for-4 as Niedergall scored twice and Greenly knocked in three runs...Taylor finished his day 2-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored in just three innings of play...Carroll was 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored...Mayer was also 2-for-3 as he scored three runs and added two RBI...Newton was 1-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored...King finished his day 3-for-5 with five runs scored, three walks and three RBI...The Chargers had 33 hits, drew 15 walks and had five batters hit by a pitch as well...FreshmanZach Bonick pitched five innings and earned his first collegiate win...He allowed just one hit and struck out four...Nate Staffieri relieved Bonick and threw two innings of scoreless ball and struck out five...Dillon Nickelpitched the final two innings and struck out three and allowed just one hit.

Extra Bases: The 35 runs scored are a new program record for the Chargers...The previous record was 31, also set against Valley Forge back in 2014...Lancaster Bible is 34-18-1 all-time against Valley Forge after Thursday's game...Taylor leads the NEAC with seven home runs, with the next player on the list having just three...Lancaster Bible and Valley Forge will play a doubleheader on Monday, Apr. 11 in Lancaster.
