Earlham Baseball Falters Against Kenyon, Finishes Spring Trip 2-1

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Earlham College baseball team saw its six-game winning streak snapped on Thursday morning as the Quakers fell to Kenyon College (Ohio) 5-2 in the final game of the 2016 spring trip.

The Lords (8-5) scored two runs on four hits in the first along with an unearned run in the third. The Quakers tallied a run on two hits in the first and a run on one hit and a walk in the third.

Kenyon would chase Earlham starter Howie Smith in the fourth, but senior Bryce Rainey came in with runners and first and second with no one out and got out of the inning unscathed.

The Quakers would not get a runner in scoring position again until the seventh inning. Senior Ethan Bailey drew a walk, and junior Eric Elkus followed with a single up the middle. The Lords pitcher, Jesse Bogacz, tallied one of his 11 strikeouts to end the inning.

Earlham would get another runner on base in the eighth, but a 5-4-3 double play ended the threat. In the ninth, two Quakers would reach base, but a lineout to third ended the contest.

Kenyon added two runs on three hits in the top of the ninth.

Junior Brennan Laird finished 2-4 with a run scored to lead Earlham offensively. Senior Thomas Rea, junior Nate Lynch, Bailey, and Elkus also recorded hits.

Smith took the loss, allowing two earned runs and seven hits in three innings of work. Rainey was stellar in his five innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

Kenyon tallied 11 hits in the victory. Ross Scheinberg led the Lords going 3-4 and scoring a run. Bogacz went the distance for the Lords, allowing two earned runs on six hits.

The Quakers end their spring trip 2-1 and stand at 9-2 overall. Earlham will open Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play on Thursday at Mount St. Joseph. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
