Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team answered almost every Sul Ross punch with a counterpunch of its own, but the Cru fell just short of landing the knockout blow in an 8-7, 14 inning loss to the Lobos Friday in Belton. UMHB falls to 10-14 overall and 5-7 in American Southwest Conference play with the loss. Sul Ross improves to 13-11 overall and 6-3 in the ASC on the year with the win.

Sul Ross took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the third inning. Dakota Parsons singled home Riley Davis in the bottom of that inning to tie the game at one. Cody Stone would come home on a Caleb Davis squeeze bunt in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Cru a 2-1 lead. UMHB loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth, cut could not add to the lead. Casey Frazier took a one-hitter into the top of the seventh, but gave up back-to-back hits to lead off the inning. That would lead to a run-scoring double play as the Lobos tied the game at 2-2. Stone's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh put UMHB up 3-2. Eli Gallego tied the game again with a towering home run to left-center field in the top of the eighth. Both teams threatened in the ninth but the game stayed 3-3 into the top of the 12th. Connor Griffith's single just slipped past the outstretched glove of a diving Seth Martin, allowing Phillip Russell to score the go-ahead run. The Cru fought back, tying the game on Mitch Patterson's two-out, pinch-hit single in the bottom of that frame. Sul Ross retook the lead on Trent Pearson's RBI single in the top of the 13th, but UMHB again had an answer in the bottom of the frame. Stone singled home the tying run, but Lobo leftfielder Ryan Deleon gunned down the winning run at the plate on the play. Sul Ross scored on a bases loaded error, bases loaded walk and a balk in the top of the 14th to grab an 8-5 lead. UMHB would close to within 8-7 on Seth Martin's two-run single in the bottom of the inning, but the Cru could not score the tying run.

Tyler Nelson took the loss for UMHB to drop to 0-1 on the year. Chris Solano earned the win for the Lobos and Coleman Ramsey notched his first save of the year. Riley Davis had four hits for the Cru and Stone and Will Stafford added three hits apiece. Four different Lobos had two hits apiece as UMHB outhit Sul Ross 19-12 in the game.

The Cru will return to action with a three-game conference series at McMurry University next weekend. The two teams will open that series with a 7:00 PM single game Friday in Abilene.
