RICHMOND, Ind. – Junior Howie Smith tossed eight innings of shutout baseball and freshman Walter Talcott nailed down his third save of the season as the Earlham College baseball team defeated Manchester University 3-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action at Sadler Stadium on Saturday.

Smith allowed six hits while striking out five in his victory. The Hamilton, Ohio, native pitched around three Quaker errors along with stranding six Spartans in scoring position.

Earlham broke the deadlock in the sixth inning with senior Brandon Smalling drove in fellow senior Ethan Bailey. Manchester got out of bases loaded jam with one out, however, and trailed just 1-0 after six complete.

The Quakers added another run in the seventh when Bailey drove home junior Brennan Laird. Earlham added a third run in the ninth on a balk.

Bailey finished 3-3 with an RBI and a walk. Sophomore Joe Pipher added two hits while Smalling and juniors Matt Barger and Eric Elkus each finished with one hit.

Tailur Szarenski led the Spartans offensively with two hits in defeat.

Earlham (17-5, 7-3 HCAC) will face Manchester in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Sadler Stadium tomorrow (Sunday).
