Marietta and Baldwin Wallace split OAC doubleheader

MARIETTA, Ohio — Sophomore closer David Stover threw 3.1 innings of shutout relief earning his third save of the season as Marietta College split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Baldwin Wallace University Sunday (April 10) afternoon. Marietta moves to 15-10 overall and 5-1 in the OAC. The Yellow jackets are 9-15 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.

The Etta Express hosted BW for the 18th annual Community Day and, despite the cold temperatures, the Pioneer faithful turned out to cheer Marietta on to the game one victory. MC beat the Yellow Jackets 5-4 in the first game, while Baldwin Wallace earned the split with a 10-0 win in the nitecap.

Stover took over for starter Christian Herstine with two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth inning and Marietta clinging to a 5-4 lead. Stover got BW's Mark Zimmerman to ground out to the second baseman for the third out of the inning. He would allow just two hits and struck out four Yellow Jackets to secure the save.

Defensive miscues were the story of the game as six of the nine runs scored in the game were unearned. Baldwin Wallace benefitted from two Pioneer errors in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Marietta got one run back in the bottom of the first. Eric White knocked in Greg Peffley with an infield single. Peffley's run was unearned as a BW error allowed him to stay alive on the base paths.

Herstine struggled with his control in the second innings issuing a pair of walks including one with the bases loaded. A sac fly from Cole Nieto scored another BW run for a 4-1 lead.

The Pioneers added a run in the second and another in third to get within one, 4-3. Michael Barnabei stole home in the second and White picked up his second RBI with a single through the right side in the third that scored Tim McCoy. McCoy led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Joey Begany.

McCoy put the Pioneers in front, 5-4, with a two-run single in the fourth inning. Tyler Packanik reached on an error to lead off the inning. Following a strikeout, Packanik stole second. Chris Petrucci walked and then both runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. After a ground out, McCoy stepped to the plate with two outs and ripped a single to second base plating both runners.

Herstine (4-2) threw 5.2 innings to get the win. He allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits. Herstine walked four and struck out three.

Zimmerman (4-3) started and took the loss for BW. He worked seven innings and gave up five runs, one earned, on seven hits. Zimmerman walked four and struck out seven. Alex Albright pitched one inning and allowed two base hits.

McCoy finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. White and Mike Hale also had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.

Evan Lovick (1-0) made his first start of the season for the Yellow Jackets in game two and tossed the complete game shutout. He scattered six hits and struck out seven without issuing a walk.

Tommy Crowl (1-3) started and was tagged with the loss for Marietta. Crowl threw 6.1 innings and allowed five runs on just four hits. He walked three and struck out three. Three other Pioneers toed the rubber in the loss.

The Yellow Jackets took the early lead with two runs in the third. BW added six more in the seventh and a pair of insurance runs in the eighth for the 10-0 victory.

Brandon Papp was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game.

The Pioneers hit the road on Wednesday (April 13) for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Otterbein University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
