Maiolo Powers #5 R-MC Baseball to ODAC DH Sweep at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Nick Maiolo (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) homered and drove in five as the fifth-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team swept an ODAC doubleheader at Lynchburg Sunday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets (23-5-1, 9-5 ODAC) took the opener 7-2 before claiming the nightcap 14-8 over the Hornets (7-23, 3-11).

Maiolo had two hits in Game 1, including a two-run single in a four-run third. He belted a two-run homer in the first inning of Game 2 and added a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Senior James Walsh (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) allowed one earned run over eight innings with nine hits, no walks and seven strikeouts to earn the victory in the opener to raise his record to 7-0.

R-MC started the scoring in the third. Junior Herminio Azor (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) had a leadoff single and moved to third on a throwing error following a bunt single by freshman Jeffrey Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch). Sophomore Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) reached on an error, allowing Azor to score the game's first run. Senior Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With one away, Maiolo singled to plate Butler and Spiers, giving the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, senior Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) sit a sacrifice fly to drive in Sanderson to make it 4-0.

The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the fourth. Azor had a one-out double and came home on a single by Butler to give R-MC a 5-0 advantage.

The Hornets tallied two in the fifth before R-MC responded in the eighth. Keeler had a one-out single, moved to second on a base hit by junior Stuart Brown and advanced to third on a single by Michael Trentham (Midlothian, Va./James River). Azor delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in Keeler and make it 6-2. Butler reached on an error, allowing Brown to score and push the advantage to 7-2.

In Game 2, the Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard quickly. With two away in the top of the first, senior Travis Lodge (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) drew a walk and Maiolo homered for the fifth time to give R-MC an early 2-0 lead.

LC tied it with two in the third before the Yellow Jackets took the lead for good in the fourth. Trentham reached on an error with one away, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a single by Azor. Sophomore Devin Strickler (York, Pa./Eastern York) drew a walk to load the bases. A fielder's choice by Butler plated Trentham to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. A Sanderson single drove in Azor and a base hit by Keeler brought home Butler to make it 5-2. Lodge doubled to center to drive in Sanderson and Keeler to give R-MC a 7-2 advantage.

Trentham doubled and scored on a passed ball in the fifth, while Strickler's run-scoring double in the seventh gave the Yellow Jackets a 9-3 lead. Lodge had an RBI triple and scored in the eighth as R-MC led 11-3. The Hornets rallied for five in the bottom of the eighth to make it 11-8.

The Yellow Jackets added three insurance runs in the ninth. Butler had an RBI single, Strickler scored on an error and Lodge delivered a run-scoring base hit to push the score to 14-8.

Sophomore Christian Cok (Chester, S.C./Lewisville) pitched a perfect ninth to secure the win and the sweep for R-MC. Sophomore Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) earned the victory, going five innings with eight hits, three runs, three walks and eight strikeouts.

Lodge went 5 for 5 and was a homer short of the cycle. He scored twice and drove in four. Trentham had three hits and three runs, while Keeler was 3 for 4 with two walks, two runs and one RBI.

Randolph-Macon travels to Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. ODAC contest. The Yellow Jackets return home on Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. encounter with No. 14 Christopher Newport. R-MC hosts Roanoke for a noon ODAC doubleheader on Saturday.
