Baseball falls to New Jersey City 7-5 in Non-Conference Matchup

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team fell to the New Jersey City Gothic Knights, 7-5, in a back and forth non-conference matchup on Wednesday night on Reinhart Field.

Sophomore Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) led Maritime with two hits, an RBI and a walk. In the bottom of the eighth, Semler also flew out to the left field warning track, narrowly missing a homerun. Sophomore Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville)and freshman Jimmy Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) each added a hit and an RBI in the loss.

Sophomores Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) both pitched three innings on the night. D'Ancona allowed just three hits and one run, facing 14 batters. Stuart also allowed one run to go along with three strikeouts.

Sophomore Eric Kwiecinski (Commack, N.Y./St. Dominic), freshman Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) and senior Michael Oliva (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) combined to pitch the final three innings of the game.

New Jersey City struck first, scoring a run in the top of the second inning. Maritime answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Senior Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) singled to start the inning and then later came around to score on a wild pitch.

After the Gothic Knights tied the game at two, the Privateers returned with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Guerriero and Deddo each hit an RBI single into left field to plate two, and Maritime added another run on an NJCU fielding error.

In the next half inning, New Jersey City posted five runs on three hits to take the lead and push the score to 7-5.

Both teams left 11 men on base in the high scoring affair. NJCU (11-4) outhit the Privateers nine to seven.

Maritime's next game is a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2, against St. Joseph's Brooklyn to start the Skyline Conference season. First pitch is at 11:00 a.m.
