THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Baseball team connected on five long balls as the Privateers defeated the John Jay Bloodhounds on the Reinhart Baseball Field by the score of 12-5.

After a 30-minute delay due to rain and thunder in the area, the Privateers got thunder of their own as sophomore Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) launched a pair of round trippers, while juniorBrian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), sophomore Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) and freshman Anthony Vieto(Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) all sent shots over the wall. For McLaughlin, it was career home run number four, while Schiavoni made it two in as many seasons. Semler and Vieto each hit the first of their Maritime careers.

The five home runs is the most-ever in a single game in modern program history, dating back to 2005 baseball season. The previous record was three home runs, which had been done in three separate games.

Freshman A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) started for the Privateers and set the Bloodhounds down in order, the got a double play after a dropped popup before striking out the final batter in the second to send the game to the bottom of the inning.

On the first pitch, Semler swung hard at the first pitch he saw at Reinhart Field and sent it sailing into the left field bullpen to put Maritime up by one. Schiavoni singled, followed by a base knock by Vieto. With a 2-0 count, McLaughlin got in on the action with a three-run home run to put the Privateers ahead by four.

Sophomore Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) reached on a single then advanced to second on a wild pitch, followed by senior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) driving him in with a base hit to centerfield.

Ammirati worked around a two out walk, as he struck out two more batters in the top of the third inning. In the top of the fourth, John Jay plated three to pull within a 5-3 score.

As the game moved to the bottom of the fourth, Vieto sent a moonshot down the right field line as the Privateers got a run back and made the game 6-3. Senior Justin Baierlein (Richmond Hill, N.Y./High School for CTEA) walked, then stole second followed by a DiLeo single to put runners on the corners with one out. The Bloodhounds went to the bullpen, and Monahan swung at a 1-1 pitch and pushed the ball through the right side to score Baierlein for Maritime's seventh run of the night.

Sophomore Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) came on in the top of the fifth inning and got the first two batters to strike out. The next batter hit a home run to pull John Jay back within three at 7-4.

With one out, Semler came up once again in the bottom of the fifth inning and with a hitter's count drove his second home run of the game out of the park to give the Privateers an 8-4 advantage. Vieto singled and moved up on a wild pitch, and later came in to score on a McLaughlin knock.

Maritime scored three more times on just one hit in the bottom of the sixth as Monahan reached as he was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) then walked, and later moved up to second on a wild pitch that also plated Monahan. The next batter was Schiavoni who sent a two-run home run over the right centerfield fence to put Maritime up by a 12-4 score.

Junior Sergio Delgado (Union City, N.J./Union City) was next on the hill for Maritime and struck out the first batter he faced, followed by a pair of pop outs for a 1-2-3 inning. The Privateers went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, before Delgado yielded a run in the top of the eighth.

In the top of the ninth, freshman Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold) came on looking to lock the game down and worked around trouble to strand a pair of runners on base as he recorded the final out of the game and give Maritime its sixth win of the season.

Semler and Vieto led the Privateers with three hits apiece, while McLaughlin, Monahan, Schiavoni and DiLeo all had multi-hit games. McLaughlin led the team with four RBIs, while Monahan, Semler and Schiavoni each drove in two. Monahan stole four bases, while Baierlein stole one in the victory.

On the hill, Ammirati threw 49 pitches to get through four innings of work as he struck out five batters. Stuart threw 42 over two innings of work as he struck on four and also recorded his first win of the season. Delgado did not walk a batter as he struck out three over his two innings of work, while Poliwoda did not yield a hit during the ninth to lock down the game.
