Keystone Ends Historic Season as NCAA Division III National Runner-Up

Appleton, Wis. – Keystone College's historic baseball season came to an end on Tuesday evening as Trinity University won the NCAA Division III National Championship with a 10-7 victory in Game 2 of the best-of-three championship series at the College World Series.  The Tigers (44-7) built an early, 5-1 lead and held off a gutsy performance by the Giants (40-11), who capped off the most successful season in school history with an NCAA Division III Runner-Up finish.

Trinity, who won the opening game of the best-of-three series earlier on Tuesday, 14-6, finished their season on a 17-game winning streak while claiming the title at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Led by 15th-year head coach Jamie Shevchik, Keystone reached the 40-win plateau for just the fourth time in program history and won its eighth consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference championship and 12th overall conference title in as many years by sweeping three straight CSAC playoff games.  The Giants then won the NCAA New England Regional championship by sweeping all four games at the regional tournament before claiming Pool B bracket title at the NCAA Division III Collegiate World Series with three straight wins to advance to the best-of-three national championship series before earning the NCAA Division III Runner-Up finish.

The back-to-back losses to Trinity mark the first time Keystone has lost consecutive games since April 2, 2015 when the Giants were swept by Farmingdale State College in a non-conference doubleheader.

Trinity jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first at-bats of Tuesday's Game 2, getting four singles and a sacrifice fly.  Jeremy Wolf drove in the game's first run with an RBI groundout, Drew Butler drove in a run with a single up the middle, and Jose Santos brought in the Tigers' third run with a sacrifice fly.

Keystone got a run back in the bottom of the first as Austin Chaszar (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Regional) led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a flyout by Chris Triano (Greenwich, CT/Rye), and came home on a single to center from Brandon Eady (Bowie, MD/DeMatha Catholic), cutting the Giants deficit to 3-1.

Trinity extended its lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the visitor's third as Santos hit an RBI triple before coming home on an Andrew Waters sacrifice fly.  Keystone got those runs back in the home half of the frame as Triano launched a two-run home run deep over the wall in left center.  Triano's home run was his team-leading 13th of the season and gave the junior his 70th and 71st RBI of the season to set a new Keystone single-season record, surpassing Nelson Gomez's previous mark set in 2008.

The Giants pulled to within a run, 5-4, with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Nate Ross (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva) doubled just inside the right field line to drive in Triano.

The Tigers thwarted Keystone's comeback bid by scoring three runs on four hits, one walk, and on error in the top of the seventh inning to restore their four-run cushion at 8-4.  Wolf hit an RBI triple before Nicholas Jewett and Santos followed with run-scoring base hits.

Back-to-back singles by Chaszar and Triano coupled with an error gave Keystone a pair of runners in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the seventh.  Eady drove in Chaszar with a single through the left side of the Trinity infield before Ross brought home Triano with a double down the left field line to pull the Giants to within a pair at 8-6.

Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single to left field for his 81st hit of the season, tying Eric Groff's single-season program record set in 2009.  Reyes then came around to score on Billy Nelson (Moscow, PA/North Pocono)'s double down the left field line as Keystone pulled to within a run, 8-7.  With two outs, the Tigers intentionally walked Triano and the tying and go-ahead runs moved up to second and third on a wild pitch, but Trinity got an inning-ending groundout to take the one-run lead to the ninth inning.

The Tigers took advantage of the momentum and added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run single up the middle from Waters to claim a 10-7 lead before retiring Keystone in order in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the national championship.

Trinity starter Ian Hussian allowed one run on three hits in 1.1 innings before handing the ball off to Chris Tate (6-0), who picked up the win despite being charged with five runs on five hits while striking out six batters in five innings on the hill. Teddy Turner went 0.2 innings with two hits against before giving way to Michael Walker, who picked up his first save of the year with one run against on two hits to go along with one K in the final two innings for the Tigers.

Santos and Waters powered Trinity with two hits and three RBI apiece while Drew Butler, who was named the Tournament MVP, had three hits for the Tigers, who held a 15-12 edge in hits for the game.

Keystone starting pitcher James Dunning (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) (3-2) suffered the loss after surrendering five runs – four of which were earned – on eight hits in 2.1 innings of work.  Yeison Andujar (Carolina, PR/Programa Educativo Alcance) allowed five runs on seven hits while fanning a pair of batters in a season-high six innings out of the bullpen.  Dylan Leahy (Maybrook, NY/Valley Central) walked the first batter he faced before striking out the next two batters to end the ninth inning.

Ross led Keystone's offense by going 3-5 with a pair of RBI while Triano and Eady had two hits and two RBI apiece.  Chaszar and Reyes added two hits in the loss for the Giants as well while Chaszar and Triano combined to score six of Keystone's seven runs on the evening.

Reyes, Ross, and Triano all tied a Keystone single-season record by playing in the 51st games this season.
