LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 16/18 ranked Spalding baseball team took advantage of early errors to take game one of their SLIAC series against Greenville, 6-4, Thursday night at Derby City Field.  

THE BASICS

SCORE: Spalding 6 – Greenville 4

RECORDS: Spalding 19-3 (6-0), Greenville 8-11 (3-3)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Quenton Brownlee grounded out to short allowing Matt Harper to advance home from third.
  • With two on and two outs in the third, Eric Meyer hit a grounder to second, but the second baseman mishandled the ball allowing Meyer to reach and Garrett Wilson to score. Harper singled up the middle driving in Joe Hatcher from second, and a throwing error by catcher Travis Ralls on a throw down at second allowed Meyer to race home as the ball sailed into center field.
  • Greenville responded with three runs over the fourth and fifth cutting SU's lead to one run, the Eagles answered in the bottom of the fifth when Meyer grounded out to short scoring Clay Kelly from third.
  • SU extended the lead to three runs in the bottom of the eighth when Wilson singled to center field bringing Brownlee in from third.

STAT LEADERS

  • Garrett Wilson, Matt Harper and Quenton Brownlee all finished with two hits, a double and one RBI.
  • Despite going 0-for-4, Eric Meyer drove in a team-high two runs and scored a run.
  • Jimi Keating earned the win pushing his record to 7-0 on the season. The senior allowed three runs, on 11 hits, while striking out 10 batters and walking two in 8.0 innings pitched.

FOR THE FOES

  • Austin Marsh led the Panthers at the plate going 3-for-5 with one RBI and a run scored.
  • Bryce Pearce (1-2) suffered the loss giving up five runs, two earned, while striking out eight batters and walking two in 5.0 innings pitched.
