FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – No. 2 Shenandoah earned its first road victory of the season Thursday afternoon in a 5-1 non-league win at Mary Washington.

Freshman Gerard DePhillips (3-0) tossed a complete game six-hitter for the Hornets (11-0). DePhillips allowed only a ninth inning home run while striking out eight and walking two in throwing the squad's first complete game of the season.

The Florham Park, New Jersey native retired the first 10 UMW hitters in order and also had a 1-2-3 eighth.

David Slupek had that home run for the Eagles (7-4) as he led off the UMW ninth with a shot to right center.

DePhillips then induced three straight groundouts to put the finishing touches on the complete game victory.

Offensively, Shenandoah scored one run in the fifth, two in the eighth and two more in the ninth to give DePhillips enough breathing room.

Catcher Dan Cameron had two of the Hornets three RBI on the day with a single in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Neil Dutton had that third RBI thanks to a double to left in the eighth that plated Jake Loew.

Loew, who had two of the Hornets eight hits on the day, reached on a one-out single to center.

The top six hitters in the SU lineup had all eight hits.

Centerfielder Michael Cruz scored two runs.

Shenandoah is back in action again this weekend in its ODAC opener versus Lynchburg. A decision about game date and time will be made Friday.
