AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Spalding University baseball team defeated 25th-ranked Concordia University Chicago, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the Matt Russ Invitational. The win improves the Golden Eagles to a 10-4 overall record. The loss drops the Cougars to 6-5 overall.

Kyle Olliges (4-0) picked up the victory, while Keaton Conner (2-1) was hit with the loss. Olliges, a senior right-hander dominated the Cougar lineup from start to finish, tossing a complete-game shutout, surrendering just six hits, while striking out 10 batters on 111 pitches.

Jeff Thompson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two triples and five RBI. Dillon Sievert went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and run scored. Blake Patterson was 2-for-4 with a double.

The first three innings flew by, as Olliges and Conner were trading blows and putting up zeros. The Golden Eagles got to Conner in the bottom of the fourth as they scored one on a Sievert sac-fly. They tacked on a couple more in the fifth on a Thompson two-run triple. Spalding broke the game open in the sixth as they took advantage of a Cougar error, going on to score four runs including a three-run triple by Thompson. There was nothing the Cougar bats could do against starter Kyle Olliges as he went on to the complete-game victory.

The Golden Eagle Nine are back in action tomorrow, March 13th, as they take on Salve Regina University in the final game of the Spalding spring trip. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 pm EST.
