Spiers Homers Twice to Power #10 R-MC past Guilford 15-4

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) homered twice and drove in five as the eighth-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team posted a 15-4 ODAC victory at Guilford in ODAC play.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 12-4 overall and 3-0 in the ODAC.

The game began on Saturday and was suspended in the bottom of the ninth due to thunderstorms. The contest was concluded on Sunday afternoon

R-MC scored four in each of the first two innings. Freshman Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) started the game with a walk and moved to third when sophomore Jeff Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) reached on an error on his sacrifice bunt. After Butler moved to second on a wild pitch, Spiers homered to center to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead. Junior Cole Migliorini (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) followed with a double and scored on a double by senior Blake Saathoff as R-MC took a 4-0 advantage.

In the second, Butler had a one-out single and stole second before Spiers went deep a second time to put the Yellow Jackets on top 6-0. Migliorini singled and scored on a double by senior Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity), who later came home on a wild pitch to put the visitors up 8-0.

The Quakers put up three in the second and one in the third to cut the deficit in half.

The Yellow Jackets would add to their lead in the late innings. In the seventh, Migliorini reached on an error and moved to second when Saathoff was hit by a pitch. With two away, sophomore Ryan Hickman (Ruther Glen, Va./Caroline) singled to bring home Migliorini. Duphorn delivered a two-run double to make it an 11-4 game.

R-MC would keep the offense going in the eighth. Following a leadoff walk to Spiers, Migliorini homered to right to extend the lead to 13-4. Brown would double and score on a double play, and Saathoff walked and came home on a wild pitch to make it 15-4.

Spiers went 3 for 5 with three runs. Migliorini also went 3 for 5 with four runs and two RBI. Hickman was 3 for 5 with one run and one RBI.

Junior Cody Thompson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) earned the win, going 6.0 innings with six hits, four runs, three earned runs, no walks and one strikeout to raise his record to 4-0. Sophomore Nick Roth III (Henrico, Va./Benedictine) hurled a pair of hitless innings with one strikeout. Junior Cullen Moore (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) pitched the final inning on Sunday with no hits, one walk and one strikeout.

Randolph-Macon and Guilford will complete their two-game set on Sunday.
