UMHB swept by Concordia

Austin, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not overcome big innings in either game as the Cru dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Concordia Texas Saturday in Austin. UMHB fell 11-5 and 13-1 to have its four game winning streak snapped. The Cru is now 7-10 overall and 4-5 in American Southwest Conference play following the two losses. The Tornados improve to 15-8 overall and 7-2 in the ASC with the two victories.

UMHB could not overcome Concordia's hot start in an 11-5 game one loss. The Tornados too advantage of three Cru errors to put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Concordia tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the second for a 9-0 lead. UMHB got a run back on Landon Dieterich's RBI infield single in the top of the third inning and Dieterich added another RBI single in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 9-2. The Tornados would push it back to a nine-run lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of that stanza. UMHB would add three runs in the top of the sixth on Mark Frankhouser's RBI single, a run-scoring balk and Dieterich's third RBI single of the game. UMHB loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but could not push across another run. Evan Samoff took the loss for the Cru to fall to 0-4. Dieterich had three of UMHB's five hits in the contest.

UMHB lost game two 13-1 after the Tornados put up ten runs in the sixth inning. Concordia manufactured runs in each of the first two innings to grab a 2-0 lead. Caleb Davis scored on Robbie Gillen's groundout in the top of the third to cut the lead to 2-1. Michael Evan's RBI single made it 3-1 Tornados in the bottom of the third before Concordia took control with ten runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jake Valadez led off with a home run and the Tornados added nine more runs to push the lead out to 13-1. The Cru went in order in the top of the seventh as the game was ended on the run rule. Dakota Best had two of UMHB's three hits in the game. Stuart Hennigar took the loss for the Cru to fall to 0-1 despite allowing just one earned run in four and two-thirds innings. Michael Williams pitched a complete-game, three-hitter to get the win for Concordia.

The Cru returns home to host Texas Lutheran University for a 7:00 PM non-conference game on Tuesday at Red Murff Field. UMHB will then host McMurry University for a three-game conference series next weekend.
