UMass Dartmouth Defeats RIC, 7-0

Providence, R.I.--The Rhode Island College baseball team dropped a 7-0 decision to UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference contest played at Pontarelli Field on Tuesday afternoon.

 

RIC (12-14, 1-6 LEC) was led by sophomore first baseman Mike Webb (Pawtucket, RI) who went 1-for-3 and drew a walk in the setback for the Anchormen.

 

Junior center fielder Zach Courier (Mansfield, MA) paced UMass Dartmouth (18-12, 6-1), going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

 

UMD got on the board in the top of the third with two runs, including an RBI double from sophomore short stop Erick Ramirez (Boston, MA).

 

The Corsairs extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth after an RBI double from Courier. UMD tacked on a run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run to left field by junior catcher Brandon Polignone (Peabody, MA) to take the 4-0 lead. The Corsairs broke the game open the top of the eighth with three runs, led by back-to-back RBI singles from Courier and junior second baseman Josh O'Neill (Halifax, MA).

 

Junior starting pitcher Benjamin Lodge (Blackstone, MA) picked up the win (5-1) on the mound for the visitors, throwing eight scoreless innings, while allowing just four hits to go along with four strikeouts.

 

Junior starting pitcher Daniel Greaves (Warwick, RI) suffered the loss (2-4) on the hill for RIC, giving up four runs on six hits to go along with five strikeouts in seven innings of work.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference action at home vs. Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, April 22 (noon).
