ASHLAND, Va. - Sophomore Nick Roth III (Henrico, Va./Benedictine) allowed two hits and one run over nine innings as the 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to top-ranked Shenandoah Saturday in ODAC action on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.

It was the second straight extra-inning defeat for the Yellow Jackets (24-10, 12-6) at the hands of the Hornets (31-3, 14-3). SU took a 5-4 win in 11 innings on Friday.

Roth allowed a one-out single in the first and the runner was erased on a double play. That started a string of 22 straight retired by Roth. He surrendered a leadoff walk in the ninth that scored on a double. Roth gave up two hits and a run with one walk and five strikeouts.

R-MC would answer in the bottom of the ninth. Senior Jay Patti (Sparks, Md./Hereford) had a leadoff triple to center and fellow senior Herminio Azor (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) pinch-ran for Patti. With one away, freshman Zach Evans (Fort Mill, S.C./Seneca) delivered a sacrifice fly to right to plate Azor with the tying run. The Yellow Jackets would load the bases with two away, but failed to plate the game-winner.

R-MC had runners in scoring position in nine different innings, but went 0 for 14 with runners in scoring position.

SU scored its three runs in the 12th with two away.

Evans finished with two hits, as did senior Stuart Brown (Midlothian, Va./Trinity) and junior Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca). Both of Brown's hits were doubles.

Randolph-Macon heads to York on Wednesday, April 26 for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
