Giants Shut Out Neumann to Advance to CSAC Championship Game

More news about: Keystone

Moosic, Pa. – Miguel Reyes (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe) fired a complete game, three-hit shutout and Chris Panzarella (Hazle Township, Pa./Hazleton Area) drove in five runs to carry Keystone College into the Colonial States Athletic Conference championship game with a 7-0 victory over Neumann University on Friday at PNC Field.  The top-seeded Giants (30-12) will play for their ninth straight CSAC title on Saturday after winning their 26th consecutive CSAC playoff game.

Keystone, who reached the 30-win plateau for 15th time in the last 16 years, will take on the winner of Friday night's 7:00 p.m. elimination game on Saturday with two chances to pick up one win for its 12th overall conference title in a row dating back to the team's tenure as a member of the North Eastern Athletic Conference. A win on Saturday would also send the Giants to the NCAA Regional Tournament for a 10th consecutive season.

#3 Neumann (21-17) will take on the winner of Friday afternoon's elimination game between #2 Immaculata University and #4 Gwynedd Mercy University at 7:00 p.m. tonight for the right to take on the Giants in the championship game.

In Friday's contest, Keystone took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Friday as Panzarella hit a two-run double down the left field line before the Giants extended their advantage to three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ryan Callahan (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) came in to score when Brendan Long (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) doubled to the left field wall.

Panzarella broke the game open in the home seventh with a two-out, three-run double to the right field fence that gave Keystone a 6-0 cushion before Tony Hunter II (Savannah, Ga./South Effingham) drove in Austin Chaszar (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) with a double to right field in the bottom of the seventh to close out the scoring.

That was more than enough for Reyes, who improve to 8-1 on the season by yielding just three singles, one walk, and two hit batsman in the dominating, complete-game effort.  The senior right-hander struck out a pair of batters on the day and got 15 flyouts and nine groundouts.

Panzarella and Long had two hits apiece as Keystone collected eight of the game's 11 hits.  Long and Anthony Ferrezza (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored a pair of runs each in the victory.

Zach Cooney was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs on five hits while striking out four batters over the first four innings on the hill for Neumann, who used relievers Anthony Stricker and Bobby Sefick to get through the final three innings.

Evan Emerich, Chuck Trentler, and Cody McNair accounted for the Knights' three hits in the loss.
