With its second consecutive loss, Babson moves to 6-3, while New Patlz improves to 6-5 on the year.
Senior Ryan Arena (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J) extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a pair of singles, and David Lennon (Windermere, Fla.) scored once for the Beavers in the loss. Junior Edward Lehr (Byram Township, N.Y.) dropped his first game of the season after giving up three runs, one earned, over five innings. Sophomore William Gallagher (Kingston, Mass.) gave up three earned runs over 1.2 innings.
First-year Anthony Pantano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored one run to lead the Hawks, while senior Dwanye Page (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), junior Danny Campbell (Pearl River, N.Y.), and sophomore Julian Francisco (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) each drove in one run apiece. Senior Conor Donachi (Garden City, N.Y.) improved to 1-2 on the year after giving up two earned runs while striking out five over 5.1 innings.
Campbell got New Paltz on the board first after with a double to drive in senior Nick DiPietro (Carmel, N.Y.), and the Hawks tacked on two more runs in second inning thanks to a single on a squeeze bunt by Francisco and another bunt by junior Ryan Frost (Beacon, N.Y) that brought home Pantano following a two-base throwing error. Babson, which stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the first, finally got to Donachie for a pair of runs in the sixth. Lennon reached after being hit, McHale followed with a single and Arena drove them both in with a single to left center two batters later.
Gallagher worked around a lead-off base hit in the sixth, but the Beavers were unable to escape trouble in the seventh. Page plated Campbell with a two-out knock to left and Pantano smacked sophomore reliever Michael Nocchi's (Manasquan, N.J.) first ptich to the base of wall in center for a two-run triple to extend the New Paltz lead to 6-2.
A trio of Hawks relievers gave up just two hits while recording three strikeouts over the final 3.2 frames.
The Beavers return to action Tuesday when they take on Bowdoin at 9 a.m.
GAME NOTES
• Monday's matchup was the first in program history for Babson against New Paltz.
• McHale's 19-game hitting streak is tied with Beavers' Hall of Famer Kevin Higa '04 for the second longest in program history. Higa produced one 19-game streak in 2002 and another as a senior in 2003. The school record is held by Dave Ahern '11, who hit safely in 24 consecutive outings between April 24, 2010 and April 2, 2011.
