No. 21 Spalding Takes Two at MacMurray, 9-0 and 7-2

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The No. 21 ranked Spalding baseball team took both games of Saturday's doubleheader at MacMurray, 9-0 and 7-2, sweeping the series to improve to 17-3 overall and 5-0 in SLIAC play.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard in the third inning when an error by the MacMurray shortstop allowed Garrett Wilson to score from third.
  • Spalding added three more runs in the fourth pushing the lead to four runs. Garrett Wilson tripled driving in Quenton Brownlee for the first run, and Dillon Sievert hit a two-run home run to cap off the inning.
  • SU put the game out of reach putting up a five spot in the seventh inning. Eric Meyer singled scoring Sievert and Joe Hatcher, and RBI singles by Isaac Lineberry and Brownlee drove in Matt Harper and Kyle Stevens for the final runs of the game.

GAME ONE STAT LEADERS

  • Hayden Davenport (4-0) earned the win, holding the Highlanders to two hits, while striking out nine batters and walking one in a complete game effort.
  • Garrett Wilson and Quenton Brownlee led SU at the plate both going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
  • Eric Meyer drove in a team-high three runs on a 1-for-4 outing.
  • Dillon Sievert finished 1-for-2 with including a home run, driving in and scoring two runs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Brendan Schanz and Nick Balkenbush led the Highlanders with one hit apiece.
  • Jeff Kuhlman (0-1) suffered loss giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits, in 4.0 innings.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • A Joe Hatcher sacrifice fly to left field brought in Garrett Wilson from third for the first run of the game.
  • In the second, Evan Trentman hit a three-run single to right field scoring Harper, Stevens and Brownlee. Trentman moved from first to third on Wilson single and scored on a Sievert fielder's choice.
  • The Golden Eagles added a run in the third and fourth inning to push the lead to seven runs. Matt Harper hit a solo home run in the third and Wilson scored on a wild pitch for Spalding's final run of the game.

GAME TWO STAT LEADERS

  • Evan Trentman went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.
  • Garrett Wilson finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
  • Matt Harper scored two runs and hit went 1-for-3 with a home run and a RBI.
  • Jack Parisi (2-1) earned his second win of the season holding MacMurray to one run, on four hits, while striking out five batters in 4.2 innings pitched.

FOR THE FOES

  • Brett Mammenga led the Highlanders with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate driving in one run.
  • Trevor Knipe (3-2) suffered loss giving up five runs, on three hits, while walking and hitting two batters, in 4.0 innings.

  • The Golden Eagles are back in action Tuesday, April 3 in top 25 clash against No. 20 ranked Maryville. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm EST.
