MOCKSVILLE, N.C. – Sophomore Tanner Hobbs got the final two outs with the bases loaded to preserve Guilford College's 5-3 baseball win over Piedmont International University Tuesday night. The sophomore's first Guilford save gave the Quakers (17-15-1) a sweep of Tuesday's nonleague twinbill after the visitors posted a 10-6 opening-game win at Nick Mando Field in Rich Park. Guilford has won seven of its last nine games.

Hobbs came on for Sean Kinloch (1-0) after the rookie pitched into the seventh inning in his first college start. Kinloch held the Bruins (2-33) scoreless until Steven Doyle's solo homer in the fifth. Piedmont International tacked on two unearned sixth-inning runs to get within two.

Holding a 5-3 lead, Kinloch retired Doyle to start the seventh, before Austin Courter reached on an error, Yerald Pagan singled and leadoff-man Emanuel Corujo walked. Hobbs relieved Kinloch and fanned Jake Grubesic before getting Josh Brinkerd to ground out and end the game. Kinloch, who entered the contest with 6.2 innings in six relief appearances this year, fanned six in 6.1 innings and scattered six hits in his first college start. He walked two and yielded three runs, one earned.

The Quakers scored three unearned runs in the second inning of game two. They upped their lead to 5-0 with a two-run fourth on sophomore Dylan Tuttle's first career homer followed by a Trevor Denton sacrifice fly. Tuttle, Brett Shapcott, and Will LaCount each had two hits for the Quakers.

Guilford scored in every inning save the seventh in the opener. The Quakers used four Bruins' errors and five walks to build a 6-0 lead and never look back. Senior Josh Shepherd paced the 11-hit effort with three hits and three runs scored. Shapcott, Logan Shortt and Rocco Wilcox each plated two runs. Ty Walser earned his first win of the season with four solid frames in which he fanned four, gave up five hits and two earned runs.

Kevin Acosta was 2-3 with three RBI for Piedmont International, which had nine hits, but stranded seven runners. Corujo and Joshua Hester both added two hits and a stolen base. Starter Kyle Reynolds dropped to 0-6 after allowing eight runs (3 earned) in four innings.
